Weekend Box Office Report: Frozen II remains solid!

Disney sequel hasn't melted yet!

Disney's winter fantasy continued its reign at the box office this weekend as FROZEN II once again took first place with an estimated $34.6 million!

The snowy sequel has built up a domestic total of $337.5 million on its third weekend, currently placing it as the seventh-highest grossing domestic release of 2019 between JOKER ($332.1 million) and the live-action remake of ALADDIN ($355.5 million).

The PG-rated fairy tale follow-up, continuing the chilly adventures of sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), has accumulated a worldwide total of $919.6 million.

There wasn't much box office fluctuation over the weekend, with the top three movies holding their positions from last week as overall business was relatively quiet before the big holiday releases (and the holidays themselves) arrive.

In second place was writer-director Rian Johnson's all-star murder mystery KNIVES OUT with $14.1 million, a cut of 47% from its opening last weekend.

The PG-13 crime comedy with Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Toni Collette and loads of others has a 12-day domestic total of $63.8 million and a worldwide total just short of $100 million, on a reported $40 million cost.

The biographical drama FORD V FERRARI was spinning its wheels in third place with $6.5 million. After four weeks, the PG-13 racing story with Christian Bale and Matt Damon has a domestic total of $91.1 million and $167.6 million worldwide, on a reported cost of $98 million.

In fourth place was the PG-rated drama A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD with $6.5 million over its third weekend. The $25 million glimpse at children's show host Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) has a domestic total of $43.1 million.

The drama QUEEN & SLIM was in fifth place with $6.5 million, slipping by 45% from last week's opening. The R-rated Daniel Kaluuya/Jodie Turner-Smith romance has a domestic a 12-day domestic total of $26.8 million on a reported $17 million cost.

In sixth place was the fact-based movie DARK WATERS with $4.1 million for the weekend as it expanded from limited release.

The PG-13 legal drama with Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway has a domestic total of $5.2 million since starting its limited release a couple of weeks back. The story has received a respectable reaction from critics with a 93% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 73 on Metacritic (the JoBlo review is HERE).

The cop thriller 21 BRIDGES was in seventh place with $2.8 million on its third weekend. The R-rated Chadwick Boseman action-drama has a domestic total of $23.9 million and $30 million worldwide on a reported cost of $33 million.

In eighth place was the John Cena firefighter comedy PLAYING WITH FIRE with $2 million. The $30 million family feature has a domestic total of $41.9 million and $49 million worldwide after five weekends.

Director Roland Emmerich's PG-13 war movie MIDWAY was in ninth place with $1.9 million, bringing the WWII drama to a domestic total of $53.4 million and a worldwide total of $120.6 million on a reported $100 million cost.

In tenth place over its tenth weekend was JOKER with $1 million. The R-rated origin of the DC Comics villain now has a domestic total of $332.1 million and $1.05 billion worldwide.

Outside the chart, the Emilia Clarke/Henry Golding romantic comedy LAST CHRISTMAS disappeared before the actual holiday itself.

Although moviegoers didn't seem to know (or particularly care), the animated PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE got released on more than 2300 screens this weekend. The toy-based family feature (with the voices of Daniel Radcliffe and Anya Taylor-Joy) had one of the worst openings ever for a wide release, grossing an estimated $670k.

That gives the PG-rated release a weekend per-screen average of around $287 — lower than everything else in theaters including DOWNTON ABBEY, which came out three months ago and is currently available to watch on demand.

In limited release, Bong Joon ho's comedy-drama PARASITE and Taika Waititi's WWII satire JOJO RABBIT each continued to perform admirably on a few hundred screens, both currently at a domestic total around $19.3 million.

Next weekend brings a batch of major new releases including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's adventure sequel JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL, the horror remake BLACK CHRISTMAS and Clint Eastwood's fact-based drama RICHARD JEWELL, while limited releases include the Adam Sandler crime drama UNCUT GEMS, the Fox News controversy BOMBSHELL and filmmaker Terence Malick's war biopic A HIDDEN LIFE.
