Weekend Box Office Report: February 5-7, 2016

Kung Fu Panda 3 wins again!

Po and the Furious Five held onto first place this weekend as KUNG FU PANDA 3 was once again on top at the box office with an estimated $21 million!

Although it retained the #1 spot going into Super Bowl Sunday, the Dreamworks computer-animated sequel dropped by nearly 50% from its opening last week. KUNG FU PANDA 3 has a 10-day domestic total of $69 million, plus another $129 million from international audiences (mostly China — it doesn't open until March in many other territories) for a worldwide total of nearly $200 million.

Opening in second place was the new comedy HAIL, CAESAR! with $11.4 million. The star-filled Hollywood satire from the Coen brothers cost a reported $22 million, and critics seemed to appreciate it more than general audiences (79% on Rotten Tomatoes versus a 'C-' CinemaScore).

THE REVENANT slipped down to third with $7.1 million on its fifth weekend in wide release. Its current domestic total of $149.7 million has crawled past the $144.8 million domestic finish of star Leonardo DiCaprio's THE GREAT GATSBY, and the R-rated survival story is now at a worldwide total of $326.1 million.

In fourth place after two months in theaters was STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS with $6.8 million. The J.J Abrams-directed sequel has blasted beyond $900 million domestic and $2 billion globally, the third movie to ever reach that mark (after TITANIC and AVATAR, of course).

The new romantic drama THE CHOICE opened in fifth with $6 million. While obviously timed for upcoming Valentine's Day, the movie had the lowest opening yet for a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, and received 8% on Rotten Tomatoes to join NORM OF THE NORTH and DIRTY GRANDPA for 2016 releases with single-digit critical averages.

Opening in sixth was the long-in-production horror/literature mashup PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES with $5.2 million. The PG-13 adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's Jane Austen/undead hybrid book had a reported $28 million cost and scored 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney’s Chris Pine/Casey Affleck ocean thriller THE FINEST HOURS sank from fourth to seventh with $4.7 million, a plunge of 54% from its opening last weekend.

The Ice Cube/Kevin Hart reunion RIDE ALONG 2 was in eighth with $4.5 million as it crossed $100 million worldwide, and the horror movie THE BOY and the Robert De Niro/Zac Efron comedy DIRTY GRANDPA closed out the list.

Outside the chart, the Chloe Moretz alien invasion thriller THE 5TH WAVE disappeared along with Michael Bay's 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI and the Wayans parody FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK (after a single week in the Top 10). Best Picture nominees THE BIG SHORT and BROOKLYN are still doing decent business ($1.7 million and $1.1 million respectively) on fewer than 1000 screens, and the Natalie Portman Western JANE GOT A GUN dropped a disastrous 84% from its already feeble opening.

Next weekend brings Ryan Reynolds as the R-rated merc-with-a-mouth DEADPOOL, Ben Stiller strikes new poses in ZOOLANDER 2, and an R-rated romantic comedy teaches HOW TO BE SINGLE.
