Weekend Box Office Report: February 3-5, 2017

Moviegoers still together on Split!

M. Night Shyamalan's multiple-personality thriller was the biggest draw for a third weekend, as SPLIT remained in the top spot at the box office with an estimated $14.5 million!

The James McAvoy-fronted movie is now brushing up against $100 million domestic and has a worldwide total of $142.7 million — a plentiful return for a $9 million investment.

With $98.7 million domestic in the bank so far, SPLIT has also passed the (unadjusted) $95 million domestic finish of Shyamalan's fan favorite UNBREAKABLE. In addition, it is the filmmaker's first movie to hold the #1 position for three straight weekends since the 1999 phenomenon THE SIXTH SENSE (which stayed there for five weeks).

Opening in second place was the new PG-13 horror sequel RINGS with $13 million. That's just short of the modest $15 million opening of (pardon the oxymoron) original remake THE RING, which went on to $129 million domestic in 2002, and far below the $35 million start of follow-up THE RING TWO in 2005.

The latest in the cursed-video series cost a reported $25 million, and has made an additional $15.2 million from international audiences. The long-delayed RINGS (first scheduled for release in November 2015) currently sits at a frightening 5% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes, and the JoBlo review is right HERE.

The Dennis Quaid hound drama A DOG'S PURPOSE heeled in third place with $10.8 million, dropping 40% from its second-place opening last weekend. The $22 million release has a ten-day domestic total of $32.9 million.

Oscar contender HIDDEN FIGURES was in fourth place with $10.1 million, followed by fellow awards hopeful LA LA LAND in fifth again with $7.4 million. It's a tight race for domestic totals, but the Emma Stone/Ryan Gosling musical is up to $268 million worldwide.

Action-horror sequel RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER moved down to sixth with $4.5 million, losing 67% of business from last week's opening for a ten-day domestic total of $21.8 million. With an additional $95.6 million from overseas, the entire RESIDENT EVIL movie franchise has now passed $1 billion worldwide.

The animated musical SING sang in seventh place on its seventh weekend in theaters with $4 million, bringing its domestic total to $262.9 million. The Oscar-nominated Dev Patel drama LION leaped onto the list in eighth with $4 million, and has a domestic total of $24.7 million after slowly expanded from its limited release on Thanksgiving weekend.

In ninth place was the new sci-fi drama THE SPACE BETWEEN US with an opening of $3.8 million. The PG-13 romance-adventure with Asa Butterfield cost a reported $30 million and was left adrift by critics with 18% on Rotten Tomatoes (check out the JoBlo review HERE).

Vin Diesel's EXTREME sequel xXx: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE was on the bottom with $3.7 million for a $40 million domestic total. The $85 million action flick has now pulled in $152 million worldwide.

Outside the chart, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY floated away after two months in the Top 10, taking MONSTER TRUCKS and Matthew McConaughey's GOLD with it. In limited release, the Robert De Niro comedy THE COMEDIAN wasn't laughing with $1.1 million on 848 screens (for a per-screen average lower than Disney's MOANA in its eleventh weekend of release).

Elsewhere, the Matt Damon action movie THE GREAT WALL has made $219 million ahead of its North American opening on February 17. And after three months in theaters, Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE quietly defeated the $668 worldwide finish of MAN OF STEEL.

Next weekend, Keanu Reeves is back for more brutal gunplay in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER TWO, the Dark Knight battles brick-shaped crime in THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, and there some BDSM in time for Valentine's Day with the sequel FIFTY SHADES DARKER.
