Weekend Box Office Report: February 19-21, 2016

Crowds are still flipping for Deadpool!

Everyone's favorite "merc with a mouth" continued to rule the box office this weekend, keeping DEADPOOL on top with an estimated $55 million!

Ryan Reynolds' gleefully R-rated lunatic dropped 58% in its second weekend but is at an impressive 10-day domestic total of $235 million, surpassing every other release in the X-Men movie franchise (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND was the previous champ with a domestic total of $234 million).

DEADPOOL has also become the highest-grossing R-rated comic adaptation, defeating the $210 million domestic total of Zack Snyder's 300. In addition, the spastic sword-swinging anti-hero has collected nearly $500 million worldwide — not too shabby considering the movie's reported $58 million cost.

Meanwhile, KUNG FU PANDA 3 fought off the competition to stay in second place with $12.5 million, but the new biblical epic RISEN was close behind in third with an opening of $11.8 million. The quest for Jesus Christ's body (from ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES and WATERWORLD director Kevin Reynolds) cost a reported $20 million and is currently at a 59% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Opening in fourth place was the new supernatural thriller THE WITCH with $8.6 million. The R-rated period horror story, which only had a reported $3.5 million production cost, gathered much accliam from festival audiences last year and now has a strong 88% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The R-rated romantic comedy HOW TO BE SINGLE was in fifth place with $8.2 million, dropping 54% from its opening last weekend for a $31.7 million domestic total on a reported cost of $38 million.

The new sports drama RACE opened in sixth with $7.2 million. The PG-13 biopic of Olympic athlete Jesse Owens (directed by Stephen Hopkins of PREDATOR 2 and LOST IN SPACE fame) had a reported cost of just $5 million, and is at 60% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ben Stiller's ZOOLANDER 2 catwalked from fourth place down to seventh with $5.5 million, losing 60% of business from last week's opening. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS was in eighth after two-and-a-half months in the Top 10, and has now collected $2.03 billion worldwide.

In ninth, THE REVENANT remains the only Oscar Best Picture contender on the list, and its domestic total of $165.1 million has passed star Leonardo DiCaprio's CATCH ME IF YOU CAN ($164 million) and DJANGO UNCHAINED ($162 million) to become the actor's third highest-grossing domestic hit. The Coen brothers' comedy HAIL, CAESAR! hung onto the bottom of the chart.

Outside the chart, RIDE ALONG 2, the horror movie THE BOY and the romance THE CHOICE all gave way. The Stephen Chow movie THE MERMAID (the highest-grossing movie ever in China) was released on 35 screens for just over $1 million.

Next weekend offers director Alex Proyas' mythological action movie GODS OF EGYPT, the heist thriller TRIPLE 9 and the sports biopic EDDIE THE EAGLE, plus a limited release of Netflix's sequel CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON: SWORD OF DESTINY.
