Weekend Box Office Report: December 9-11, 2016

Mo money for Moana!

Disney ruled the box office for a third weekend as MOANA stayed on top with an estimated $18.8 million!

The Polynesian princess, accompanied by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's burly demigod, has collected $238 million worldwide.

Opening in second place was OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY with $17.5 million. The R-rated holiday blowout with stars T.J. Miller, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman had the best opening for a Christmas-themed movie with an actual December release date (most holiday movies hit theaters before Thanksgiving). For comparison, KRAMPUS landed on screens last December 4th with $16.2 million and ultimately gathered a $42.7 million domestic total.

The new yuletide bash filled with booze and bad behavior cost a reported $45 million, and devoured an additional $16.4 million from international audiences. Critics were feeling Grinchy toward the festivities with a 43% average on Rotten Tomatoes (you can read the JoBlo review HERE).

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM was found in third place with $10.7 million. The $180 million Harry Potter spinoff is just short of $200 million domestic and has rounded up $680 million worldwide.

In fourth place was ARRIVAL with $5.6 million as the alien invasion thriller has now hovered in the top half of the chart for five weekends. Director Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi movie has a domestic total of $81.4 million and a global total of $129.8 million.

DOCTOR STRANGE remained in fifth place with $4.6 million after a month and a half in release. With a worldwide total of $645.8 million, Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme has wielded enough magic to pass the $644 global finish of THOR: THE DARK WORLD.

The Brad Pitt/Marion Cotillard spy thriller ALLIED was in sixth with $4 million. The R-rated $85 million war movie from director Robert Zemeckis now has a worldwide total of $69.5 million.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS expanded onto 1200 screens and snuck into seventh place with $3.1 million. The Jake Gyllenhaal/Amy Adams psychological thriller from director Tom Ford has a domestic total of $6.2 million after three weekends in limited release. The acclaimed Casey Affleck drama MANCHESTER BY THE SEA also added screens to its limited release to leap onto the list in eighth with $3.1 million.

Toward the bottom, the animated musical TROLLS was in ninth with $3.1 million and director Mel Gibson's WWII drama HACKSAW RIDGE held on in tenth with $2.3 million.

Outside the chart, the holidays were no longer cheerful for ALMOST CHRISTMAS and BAD SANTA 2, and the exorcism cheapie INCARNATE was sent to the underworld after one week in the Top 10. In limited release, the Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone musical LA LA LAND had an incredible $171k per-screen average to start. Natalie Portman's portrayal of JACKIE added 21 screens for $495k, while the Jessica Chastain political thriller MISS SLOANE added 1600 screens but only pulled $1.9 million for eleventh place.

Next weekend shows us the acquisition of Death Star plans in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, Will Smith chats with metaphysical manifestations in COLLATERAL BEAUTY, and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone dance into wide release with LA LA LAND.
