Audiences are still going Rogue!

Moviegoers decided to ring in the New Year with the Rebellion, keeping ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY in first place at the box office with an estimated $49 million!

With a domestic total of $424 million, the prequel to the original 1977 STAR WARS is now the second-biggest release of 2016 behind the $486 million domestic finish of FINDING DORY. Along with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR's $408 million domestic total, Disney had the three highest-grossing movies of the year, significantly contributing to a record-setting $11.4 billion 2016 domestic box office.

While $424 million is an impressive sum, so far ROGUE ONE still isn't even halfway to the record-blasting $936 million domestic total of last December's STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

The animated animals of SING were in second place for the holiday weekend with $41.4 million. The $75 million PG-rated musical from Illumination Entertainment (DESPICABLE ME, MINIONS) has a domestic total of $165 million after 12 days in theaters.

In third place was the deep space romance PASSENGERS with $15.5 million. The PG-13 pairing of Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, which cost a reported $110 million, has reached a 12-day domestic total of $60.6 million. Disney's MOANA followed in fourth with $10.1 million for a domestic total of $210 million after six weeks in theaters.

Denzel Washington's acting-directing effort FENCES was in fifth place with $10.1 million. The Oscar-buzzed drama with Viola Davis has a domestic total of $30 million since its wide release on Christmas Day.

The R-rated James Franco/Bryan Cranston comedy WHY HIM? came in sixth place with $9.5 million, down 43% from last week's opening for a ten-day domestic total of $34 million.

The Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone musical LA LA LAND danced into 750 locations and made $9.3 million for the weekend, bringing its total to $34 million after limited release expansion over the past few weekends.

In eighth place was the videogame adaptation ASSASSIN'S CREED with $8 million. The Michael Fassbender action movie has a domestic total of $39 million since it leaped onto screens on December 21st. The acclaimed Casey Affleck drama MANCHESTER BY THE SEA and Will Smith's COLLATERAL BEAUTY closed out the list heading into 2017.

Outside the chart, OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY came to a finish. In limited release, HIDDEN FIGURES and 20TH CENTURY WOMEN continue to post solid per-screen averages along with Martin Scorsese's SILENCE and Mark Wahlberg/Peter Berg's PATRIOT'S DAY, while A MONSTER CALLS and Ben Affleck's LIVE BY NIGHT seem to be struggling for attention.

Next weekend has Kate Beckinsale back in leather for UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS (which has already collected $50 million in international release), while HIDDEN FIGURES and A MONSTER CALLS expand into wide release.
