Weekend Box Office Report: December 2-4, 2016

Moana stays strong!

Disney's island princess and her demigod colleague continued bringing in crowds this weekend, keeping MOANA on top with an estimated $28.3 million!

The latest animated feature from the Mouse House went down 50% from last weekend's first-place opening. For comparison, FROZEN dropped by 53% in its second week, although it went on to a massive domestic total of $400 million. MOANA has reached $119.8 million domestic after twelve days in theaters.

The Harry Potter spinoff FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM continues to do big business, hanging onto second place with $18.5 million. The $180 million fantasy is up to $183.5 million domestic and has crossed $600 million worldwide.

The Amy Adams extraterrestrial interaction ARRIVAL actually ascended two places to third with $7.3 million, and has climbed higher than $100 million worldwide after a month on screens.

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard's spy activities held fourth place as ALLIED captured $7 million, dipping only 44% from its opening last week. The Robert Zemeckis-directed WWII thriller has a domestic total of $28.9 million (on an $85 million reported cost).

In fifth was Marvel's master of mystic arts DOCTOR STRANGE with $6.4 million, bringing its domestic total to $215 million after five weekends (defeating the $206 million domestic finish of THOR: THE DARK WORLD). A worldwide total of $634.9 million means the good doctor has also beaten the $623 million global total of Tony Stark's second effort IRON MAN 2.

TROLLS remained in sixth place with $4.6 million as the animated Dreamworks musical-comedy now has a domestic total of $141.3 million. Director Mel Gibson's WWII drama HACKSAW RIDGE actually added screens on its fifth week of release and jumped two spots to seventh with $3.4 million.

The R-rated Christmas comedy BAD SANTA 2 was hungover in eighth place with $3.2 million, down 46% from the Billy Bob Thornton sequel's disappointing seventh-place debut last week.

Opening in ninth place was the new PG-13 exorcism movie INCARNATE with $2.6 million. Like an increasing number of horror releases, the Aaron Eckhart supernatural thriller only cost a reported $5 million to make. It received a scary 21% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (you can read the Arrow in the Head review HERE).

The Danny Glover/Gabrielle Union holiday comedy-drama ALMOST CHRISTMAS closed out the list with $2.5 million for a domestic total of $38.1 million on its fourth weekend.

Outside the chart, the Hailee Steinfeld comedy THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN slipped out of sight. In limited release, Natalie Portman's portrayal of former First Lady JACKIE had an excellent $55k per-screen average to start, and the acclaimed Casey Affleck drama MANCHESTER BY THE SEA added 100 screens to land just outside the Top 10 with $2.3 million.

Next weekend has the R-rated holiday comedy OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY, while Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling dance into limited release with LA LA LAND and the Jessica Chastain political thriller MISS SLOANE expands wide.
