Weekend Box Office Report: December 11-13, 2015

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Mockingjay remains on top!

Katniss Everdeen still had enough fight left in her to keep THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 at #1 this weekend with an estimated $11.3 million!

The post-apocalytpic Jennifer Lawrence franchise finale has now been the box office winner four weekends in a row — one more than last year's MOCKINGJAY PART 1, which ended with a domestic total of $337 million.

The weekend's only big new release IN THE HEART OF THE SEA opened in second place with $11 million. Director Ron Howard's adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick's book, detailing the events that inspired Herman Melville's classic "Moby Dick", cost a reported $100 million. The Chris Hemsworth starrer was held underwater by critics with 43% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Pixar's THE GOOD DINOSAUR was in third place with $10.4 million as it trundles to a domestic total of $89.6 million after three weeks (the studio's summer hit INSIDE OUT made $90.4 million just on its opening weekend).

CREED was still punching in fourth with $10.1 million as the ROCKY spinoff nears $80 million domestic. It was followed by the horror-comedy KRAMPUS with $8 million, a 50% drop from its #2 opening last weekend. The PG-13 Christmas fright flick has a 10-day domestic total of $28.1 million (on a $15 million reported cost).

In sixth was SPECTRE with $4 million and a domestic total of $190.7 million on its sixth weekend in theaters. The latest James Bond mission is up to $820 million worldwide. The R-rated holiday comedy THE NIGHT BEFORE was close behind 007 in seventh with $3.9 million.

THE PEANUTS MOVIE was in eighth, and the acclaimed dramas SPOTLIGHT and BROOKLYN are still going at the bottom of the list despite being on around 1000 screens each.

Outside the chart, the thriller THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES slipped away while the limited release of the financial collapse drama THE BIG SHORT grabbed an impressive $90k per-screen average (and an 86% critical response on Rotten Tomatoes). Of the award contenders in limited release, the Cate Blanchett drama CAROL is still doing strong business with $21k per-screen on its fourth weekend.

Next week continues where George Lucas left off as director J.J. Abrams takes us back to a galaxy far, far away in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. For moviegoers who aren't interested in zooming through space with iconic characters, options include ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP or the Amy Poehler/Tina Fey comedy SISTERS.
