Weekend Box Office Report: Bad Boys for Life is still in charge!

Bad Boys for thrice!

The return of Miami's finest cops continued to rule the box office on Super Bowl weekend as BAD BOYS FOR LIFE held the top spot for a third time with an estimated $17.6 million!

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's R-rated action reunion now has a domestic total of $148 million, overtaking the $138.5 million domestic total of the Michael Bay-directed 2003 sequel BAD BOYS II.

With a worldwide total of $290.7 million, the $90 million Sony sequel from director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah has also passed the $273 million global finish of BAD BOYS II (and more than doubled the $141 million worldwide total of the original BAD BOYS in 1995).

Still battling in second place was Universal's World War I thriller 1917 with $9.6 million on the weekend before it potentially takes home an Oscar. Director Sam Mendes' $90 million "single take" war drama has scrambled to a domestic total of $119.2 million and $249 million worldwide.

Robert Downey Jr.'s conversations with A-list animals remained in third place as DOLITTLE made $7.7 million on its third weekend in theaters. The PG-rated period adventure from Universal has a domestic total of $55.2 million and a worldwide total of $126.6 million, on a reported cost of $175 million.

Opening in fourth place was the new PG-13 horror movie GRETEL & HANSEL with $6 million.

Starring Alice Krige and Sophia Lillis (young Beverly in the two-part adaptation of Stephen King's IT), the PG-13 fantasy-thriller from director Oz Perkins cost a reported $5 million.

Critics were ambivalent about visiting the creepy countryside in the latest twist on the classic Grimm fairy tale, giving the movie a 56% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 64 on Metacritic. See what's cooking with the JoBlo review HERE.

In fifth place was director Guy Ritchie's R-rated ensemble crime story THE GENTLEMEN with $6 million, slipping by 44% from its opening last weekend.

The $22 million action-comedy with Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell and Henry Golding has a ten-day domestic total of $20.4 million and a worldwide total of $42.9 million.

Now two months in the Top 10, the PG-13 sequel JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL was in seventh place with $6 million. Sony's $125 million adventure with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black has climbed to a domestic total of $291.2 million and a worldwide total of $754.8 million.

In seventh place was STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER with $3.1 million. After seven weeks, Disney's PG-13 conclusion to the nine-movie Skywalker saga has a domestic total of $507 million and a worldwide total of $1.05 billion, on a reported cost of $275 million.

The PG-13 horror-thriller THE TURNING was in eighth place with $3 million, scaring away 56% of business from last weekend's opening. Universal's $14 million adaptation of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw" with Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard has a ten-day domestic total of $11.7 million and $14 million worldwide.

In ninth place was writer-director Greta Gerwig's drama LITTLE WOMEN with $3 million over its sixth weekend in theaters. The PG-13 period piece is edging toward the $100 million domestic mark and has a worldwide total of $162.8 million, on a reported cost of $40 million.

In tenth place with an opening weekend of $2.8 million was the new R-rated drama THE RHYTHM SECTION.

Based on Mark Burnell's novel and directed by Reed Morano ("The Handmaid's Tale"), Paramount's revenge thriller with Blake Lively, Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown cost a reported $50 million. It was originally planned for release in February 2019.

Critics weren't exactly caught up in the intrigue, giving the movie an average of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 44. Set your sights on the JoBlo review HERE.

Outside the chart, the case was closed for the Michael B. Jordan/Jamie Foxx legal drama JUST MERCY, and Rian Johnson's murder mystery KNIVES OUT finally departed the list on its tenth weekend in release.

In limited release, the R-rated workplace harrassment drama THE ASSISTANT got off to a moderate start with a $21k per-screen average. Critics currently have the Hollywood abuse story at an average of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 76 on Metacritic (the JoBlo review from Sundance is HERE).

Next weekend gets February going with the return of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in BIRDS OF PREY, while horror happens at a remote location in THE LODGE.
