The Hitman's Bodyguard shoots to #1!

The power pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson easily put THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD on top at the box office this weekend with an estimated opening of $21.6 million!

As summer winds down, the duo gunned their way into first place with an R-rated action offering. While it's nowhere near the $132 million start of Reynold's DEADPOOL last year, it's still the actor's best opening weekend for a live-action movie since SAFE HOUSE, which opened with $40 million in 2012. (Jackson, meanwhile, has already been a supporting player in enough major blockbusters to technically make him the highest-grossing actor of all time.)

The bullet-riddled buddy-comedy (which also features Salma Hayek and Gary Oldman) didn't exactly hit the bullseye with critics, who gave it an average of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the JoBlo review HERE.

Dropping to second place was last week's winner ANNABELLE: CREATION with $15.5 million, down 55% from its opening. The R-rated $15 million horror prequel-prequel has a ten-day domestic total of $64 million and $160 million worldwide — enough to push the entire THE CONJURING franchise (consisting of four movies) over $1 billion globally.

Opening in third place was LOGAN LUCKY with $8 million.

Even with a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Daniel Craig, director Steven Soderbergh's return from supposed retirement started lower than the filmmaker's previous release SIDE EFFECTS, which opened with $9.3 million in 2013. (Before that, MAGIC MIKE was a hit with a $39 million opening and $113 million finish.)

The new PG-13 heist movie cost a reported $29 million, and received a strong response from critics with 93% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

Christopher Nolan's WWII drama DUNKIRK continued doing solid business on its fifth weekend in theaters, now in fourth place with $6.7 million. The $100 million war epic has a domestic total of $165.5 million and nearly $400 million worldwide.

Animated sequel THE NUT JOB 2: NUTTY BY NATURE was in fifth with $5.1 million, dipping 38% from its opening last week for a ten-day domestic total of $17.6 million (still less than the first movie's $19 million opening). THE EMOJI MOVIE followed in sixth with another $4.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $71.7 million (on a $50 million reported cost).

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING was still clinging to seventh place with $4.2 million, and the R-rated comedy GIRLS TRIP was in eighth with $3.8 million as it cracked the $100 million mark this week. THE DARK TOWER continues to deteriorate in ninth place with $3.7 million for a domestic total of $41.6 million after three weekends.

The crime-thriller WIND RIVER jumped onto the list in tenth place with $3 million as it expanded to almost 700 screens.

The R-rated Jeremy Renner/Elizabeth Olsen drama, from SICARIO and HELL OR HIGH WATER writer Taylor Sheridan, has a domestic total of $4.1 million after its limited release run (it cost a reported $11 million).

Outside the chart, ATOMIC BLONDE took off with drama THE GLASS CASTLE and Halle Berry's thriller KIDNAP. In addition to passing the $403 million domestic total of Sam Raimi's first SPIDER-MAN movie (three weeks after leaving the Top 10), DC Comics heroine WONDER WOMAN has also now topped $800 million worldwide.

Next week quietly finishes up the summer movie season with the animated LEAP! and the Bruce Lee story BIRTH OF THE DRAGON, while the 3D reissue of TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY also blasts onto screens.
