Melissa McCarthy nudged past battling superheroes to put her new comedy THE BOSS on top this weekend with an estimated $23.4 million!

Considering that THE BOSS only took first place by a margin of a few thousand dollars, McCarthy's latest may have to settle for second place when the actual figures are calculated tomorrow, but for the moment it's at #1.

The R-rated comedy opened between the previous two efforts from the actress (TAMMY with $21.5 million and last summer's SPY with $29 million), while her team-up with Sandra Bullock in THE HEAT opened with $39.1 million in 2013. THE BOSS cost a reported $29 million, and critics locked it away with an 18% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Zack Snyder's smackdown of comic book icons BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE was in close second with $23.4 million. With a domestic total of $296.6 million, the costumed fracas has passed the $291 domestic finish of the Snyder's MAN OF STEEL, and is also the director's highest-grossing movie.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE is now at a worldwide total of $783.5 million, overpowering fellow comic book adaptations CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER ($714 million), X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST ($747 million), THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ($757 million), GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ($773 million), and this year's R-rated phenomenon DEADPOOL ($755 million).

Disney's ZOOTOPIA was in third place with $14.3 million. After a month-and-a-half in theaters, the animated animals are approaching $300 million domestic while reaching $852 million worldwide. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 followed in fourth with $6.4 million for a domestic total of $46.7 million.

The new first-person action movie HARDCORE HENRY opened in fifth place with $5 million. The R-rated release, which cost a reported $10 million, was shot entirely from the protagonist's perspective. With a 51% average on Rotten Tomatoes, the experience seemed to leave critics divided between exhilarated and nauseated.

The Jennifer Garner religious drama MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN was in sixth with $4.8 million, and the faith-based sequel GOD'S NOT DEAD 2 drifted past it to seventh with $4 million, a drop of 47% from last weekend's opening.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT was in eighth place with $3.6 million, and after a month in theaters has still not made half the $130 million domestic finish of INSURGENT. The thrillers 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and EYE IN THE SKY closed out the list.

Outside the chart, DEADPOOL finally departed the Top 10 with a $358 domestic total, and the spoof MEET THE BLACKS disappeared after one week on the list. The Jake Gyllenhaal drama DEMOLITION opened on 854 screens for $1.1 million, and the Michael Shannon sci-fi thriller MIDNIGHT SPECIAL added 435 locations also for $1.1 million. Richard Linklater's comedy EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! expanded to 63 theaters for $510k and a total nearing $1 million.

Next weekend brings Jon Favreau's live-action Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK, Ice Cube trims more tops in BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT, and Gary Oldman puts Ryan Reynolds' memory into Kevin Costner in CRIMINAL, while limited releases include a white supremacist Patrick Stewart in GREEN ROOM.
