Weekend Box Office Report: April 7-9, 2017

The Boss Baby stays on top!

For a second weekend, Alec Baldwin's animated infant alter-ego was in charge at the box office as THE BOSS BABY remained in first place with an estimated $26.3 million!

The Dreamworks family feature (from MADAGASCAR series director Tom McGrath) dropped 47% from its opening last weekend, and has a ten-day domestic total of $89.3 million.

The suit-wearing toddler has also made an additional $110 million from international audiences for a worldwide total of nearly $200 million.

Disney's live-action musical BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was in second place once again with $25 million, bringing its domestic total to $432.3 million after a month in theaters.

The fairy tale romance has enchanted another $545 million from overseas crowds for a worldwide total of $977 million, topping the $966 global finish of last year's live-action update of THE JUNGLE BOOK.

Opening in third place was the animated SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE with $14 million.

The third feature with the little blue humanoids abandoned the live-action crossover of the previous two movies, and saw diminishing returns as a result — THE SMURFS opened with $35.6 million in 2011 (ending with $563 million worldwide), and the sequel started with $17.5 million in 2013.

The PG-rated adventure (featuring voices like Julia Roberts, Mandy Patinkin and Joe Manganiello) cost a reported $60 million, and has a worldwide total of $56.1 million after opening elsewhere last weekend. Critics clearly didn't think it was smurfy enough, giving it a 39% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

In fourth place was the new comedy GOING IN STYLE with an opening of $12.5 million.

The PG-13 remake of the 1979 comedy swapped in Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin for the previous movie's Art Carney, George Burns and Lee Strasburg as a trio of seniors who turn to crime.

The Zach Braff-directed update cost a reported $25 million. Critics weren't completely amused by the plight and plan of the retirees, with an average of 44% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

In fifth place was the live-action GHOST IN THE SHELL with $7.3 million. The futuristic PG-13 Scarlett Johansson action movie dropped 60% for a ten-day domestic total of $31.5 million.

The $110 million adaptation of the sci-fi manga/anime favorite has a $124 million worldwide total after opening in China and Japan this past weekend.

The big-screen POWER RANGERS were in sixth place with $6.2 million for a domestic total of $75.1 million, and $117 million worldwide (on a $100 million cost). The big gorilla of KONG: SKULL ISLAND followed in seventh with $5.8 million, stomping to a worldwide total of $534 million.

LOGAN still has longevity after a month and a half, now in eighth place with $4 million. With $218 million domestic, Wolverine's third solo outing passed the $214 million finish of X2: X-MEN UNITED and is also within a claw's length of $600 million worldwide.

The list was rounded out by Jordan Peele's R-rated horror horror hit GET OUT and the new religious drama THE CASE FOR CHRIST, which opened in tenth with $3.9 million.

Outside the chart, the sci-fi thriller LIFE drifted out of orbit, and CHIPS drove away with Jessica Chastain's THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE. In limited release, the Anne Hathaway monster comedy COLOSSAL opened with a decent per-screen average of $31k, and the British WWII drama THEIR FINEST started out with $19k per-screen. The Chris Evans drama GIFTED opened in 56 locations for a $476k weekend.

Next week has a single wide release as family collides with preposterous vehicular mayhem in THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS, while the adventure THE LOST CITY OF Z starts in limited release.
