Furious 7 blasts to #1!

Audiences were feeling the need for speed this weekend, putting FURIOUS 7 on top at the box office with an estimated $143.6 million!

That puts FURIOUS 7 in ninth place for all-time biggest domestic openings, just behind SPIDER-MAN 3 ($151 million). In addition to the highest Easter weekend opening, it has also blown by CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER’s $95 million opening to become the biggest April debut.

The seventh in the unstoppable vehicular mayhem series also drove away with an additional $240.4 million from international audiences, for a ludicrous worldwide opening weekend total of $384 million! That's the fourth-best global opening ever, behind THE AVENGERS and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE and DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II.

Fantastic news for FURIOUS 7 director James Wan — the first entry since TOKYO DRIFT without director Justin Lin screamed past the opening of FAST & FURIOUS 6, which started with $97.3 million in May of 2013 and went on to $238.6 million domestic and $788 million worldwide. FURIOUS 7 is nearly halfway to that global total after its first three days!

To further put it in perspective, FURIOUS 7's domestic opening already motored by the totals of TOKYO DRIFT ($62.5 million) and 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS ($127.1 million), and it's coming up on the rear bumper of the first movie's $144.5 million and part four's $155 million.

Not that it really matters, but critics were sufficiently thrilled with the latest stunt-packed ensemble spectacle (and the final sendoff for late star Paul Walker) for an 82% average on Rotten Tomatoes, and moviegoers gave it an 'A' CinemaScore.

The animated Dreamworks feature HOME had to get out of the way of the oncoming traffic, sliding to second after a weekend at the top with $27.4 million (down 47% from its opening) for a $95.6 million 10-day total. The R-rated Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart team-up GET HARD didn't stay hard, in third place with $12.9 million for a drop of 62% from its opening last weekend.

Disney's live-action CINDERELLA held onto fourth place with $10.2 million as it steps close to $400 million worldwide. THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT was close behind with $10 million, passing the $100 million domestic mark this weekend.

The low-budget horror movie IT FOLLOWS slipped a spot to sixth with $2.4 million, down only 35% from its wide release last week (although it did add 430 more screens). Opening in seventh was the fact-based Helen Mirren/Ryan Reynolds historical drama WOMAN IN GOLD with $2 million on just 258 screens, for the second-highest per-screen average in the Top 10.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE is still on the list after two months in theaters, followed by the religious melodrama DO YOU BELIEVE? and THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL. Outside the chart, Liam Neeson and Sean Penn's geriaction movies RUN ALL NIGHT and THE GUNMAN were sent to the nursing home.

Next weekend has only the new Nicholas Sparks romance adaptation THE LONGEST RIDE hitting wide release, plus limited releases of Alex Garland's sci-fi thriller EX MACHINA and Simon Pegg's crime caper KILL ME THREE TIMES.
