The Jungle Book still holds the top!
For a third straight weekend, Disney's live-action version of THE JUNGLE BOOK was king of the box office with an estimated $42.4 million!
The crowds keep coming to see director Jon Favreau's talking animals, pushing the movie's domestic total to $252 million. Bringing the jungle and its denizens to life may have cost a reported $175 million, but the update of Rudyard Kipling's tale has now made $685 million worldwide, with only a group of costumed heroes coming to challenge its reign.
The fairy tale spinoff THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR managed to hold onto second place with $9.3 million. The Chris Hemsworth/Charlize Theron/Emily Blunt/Jessica Chastain action-adventure dropped 52% from its opening last week, and is now at a worldwide total of $130 million (on a reported production cost of $115 million).
Of the weekend's new releases, the kitten comedy KEANU performed the best with a third place opening of $9.3 million. The feline crime caper from Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele cost a reported $15 million, and amused enough critics to earn a decent 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new comedy MOTHER'S DAY opened in fourth place with $8.3 million. Despite a cast of familiar faces including Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Timothy Olyphant and Kate Hudson, the third holiday-themed movie from director Garry Marshall started out with less than his NEW YEAR'S EVE ($13 million) and just a fraction of the 2010 hit VALENTINE'S DAY ($56.2 million).
With a reported $25 million production budget, Marshall's latest only cost around half that of his previous ensemble efforts, but it was greeted with a tragic 8% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT was in fifth place with $6.1 million for a domestic total of $44.7 million after three weekends, and Disney's ZOOTOPIA finally slipped off the top half of chart in its ninth weekend of release as it added another $5 million to its impressive worldwide total of $931 million.
The new computer-animated feature RATCHET & CLANK opened in seventh with $4.8 million. Based on the long-running Playstation video game series, the movie only cost a comparatively modest $20 million to produce, but critics switched off with a 19% Rotten Tomatoes average.
Melissa McCarthy's THE BOSS was in eighth place as it has nearly doubled its reported cost after a month in theaters, and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE edges toward the bottom and the Kevin Costner action-thriller CRIMINAL hangs on in tenth.
Outside the chart, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 took off with EYE IN THE SKY and the Mexican comedy COMPADRES. In limited release, the Tom Hanks drama A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING expanded to 523 locations for $931k and the Patrick Stewart thriller GREEN ROOM added 440 screens for $960k.
While North America (and China and Russia) have to wait a few more days, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opened in a number of overseas territories and has made $200 million since Wednesday — just short of the $201 million that AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON started with last year before it launched in the US.
The summer movie season officially kicks off next weekend with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR as the only major release.
