Avengers: Infinity War blows up the box office!
Marvel's superheroes gathered to defend the world in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR this weekend, blasting into first place with an estimated opening of $250 million!
Assuming that figure holds when tomorrow's actual totals are calculated, it will mark the biggest domestic debut in history, surpassing the $247.9 million opening of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.
The Russo Brothers' collective of comic characters crushed records for single-day gross on Saturday ($83 million) and Sunday ($62 million), defeating JURASSIC WORLD ($69 million) and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ($60 million) respectively.
The critical tussle with Thanos also scored $105.9 million on Friday (including $39 million from Thursday night previews), second only to the $119 million first day of (once again) STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.
The all-star culmination of the extensive Marvel Cinematic Universe (or at least the chapter before next summer's AVENGERS 4) also amassed $380 million from international audiences, behind only the $443 million foreign first-weekend total of last year's THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS.
But the $630 million worldwide opening for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR obliterated the previous record, zooming past the $541 million global start of THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS.
Marvel's PG-13 battle for all the marbles (or cosmic stones) may have cost as much as $400 million. Critics gave the anticipated A-list altercation an average of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes (you can check out the JoBlo review HERE).
The John Krasinski/Emily Blunt horror hit A QUIET PLACE held its own fairly well against the incoming purple tyrant, grabbing another $10.7 million on its fourth weekend in theaters. The $17 million PG-13 thriller now has a domestic total of $148.1 million and $235 million worldwide.
Amy Schumer's comedy I FEEL PRETTY retained third place with $8.1 million, dropping 49% from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $29.5 million (on a $32 million reported cost).
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's creature smackdown RAMPAGE was in fourth with $7.1 million, bringing it to $77.9 million domestic. The $120 million videogame adaptation has a worldwide total of $334.6 million.
BLACK PANTHER leaped several spots up to fifth place with $4.3 million, perhaps satisfying moviegoers who found sellouts of INFINITY WAR but still sought a weekend Marvel fix. The king of Wakanda has collected $668 million domestic and $1.33 billion worldwide.
R-rated comedy sequel SUPER TROOPERS 2 was in sixth with $3.6 million, skidding off the road with a 76% loss of business from last week's opening. The $13.5 million (partially crowdfunded) follow-up from the Broken Lizard team has a ten-day domestic total of $22 million.
Blumhouse horror flick TRUTH OR DARE landed in seventh with $3.2 million, now up to $35.3 million domestic on a $3.5 million budget. Comedy BLOCKERS was in eighth with $2.9 million, followed by Steven Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE adaptation with $2.4 million. R-rated thriller TRAFFIK closed out the list with $1.6 million, slipping 58% from its opening last week.
Outside the chart, Wes Anderson's stop-motion ISLE OF DOGS moved to a farm upstate after fetching $27 million domestic and $45 million worldwide. In limited release, the Rachel Weisz/Rachel McAdams romance DISOBEDIENCE made an impression with a $48k per-screen average.
Next weekend offers romcom remake OVERBOARD, the Charlize Theron comedy TULLY and the David Tennant thriller BAD SAMARITAN.
