Avengers: Endgame decimates records!

Marvel's ultimate cinematic chapter entered theaters and the history books this weekend as AVENGERS: ENDGAME opened to a staggering $350 million!

That extraordinary amount dusted the $257.6 million start of last year's AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, which previously held the top spot for domestic openings. (Back in 2012, the original THE AVENGERS was the first movie to open with more than $200 million domestic, which now seems almost quaint by comparison.)

The astonishing new gathering of superheroes obliterated the domestic record for biggest opening day with $156.7 million (including $60 million from Thursday night previews, also a record), and also had the biggest Saturday and Sunday figures. Despite its three-hour runtime, ENDGAME is also the widest release ever, launching on 4662 screens in North America.

Marvel's mighty all-stars, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and more familiar actors than you can fit in an Avengers compound, also collected $859 million from international audiences (with China accounting for $330 million) for a record-demolishing $1.2 billion worldwide weekend. That already gives AVENGERS: ENDGAME the 18th highest global gross ever, right behind the $1.21 billion worldwide finish of IRON MAN 3.

Just over its opening weekend, the massively anticipated 22nd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has surpassed the final domestic totals for 13 previous entries in the franchise (ahead of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING's $334 million domestic tally), and is larger than 16 of the global totals in the series (zooming past the $1.15 billion worldwide finish of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR). All together, Marvel's releases have now grossed nearly $20 billion worldwide.

Other notable box office milestones included the biggest IMAX debut with $91.5 million of the worldwide total, and an eye-popping 45% of the estimated global sum earned from 3D showings.

An unprecendented accomplishment of storytelling, logistics and secrecy, directors Anthony and Joe Russo's senses-shattering conclusion to the interconnected Infinity Stone saga was rumored to cost $350 million or more.

Critics certainly seemed satisfied with the ambitious culmination of marvelous events, giving the movie a 96% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Snap over to the JoBlo review HERE.

CAPTAIN MARVEL surged to second place with $8 million, perhaps a result of moviegoers who wanted to catch up before ENDGAME (or as a consolation to sold-out screenings).

After eight weekends, Brie Larson's cosmic warrior has a domestic total of $413.5 million (brushing past the $412 million domestic finish of fellow heroine WONDER WOMAN) and a worldwide total of $1.11 billion, on a reported $170 million cost.

The James Wan-produced horror movie THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA moved to third place with $7.5 million, with 71% of business frightened away from its first-place opening last weekend. The R-rated supernatural terror has a ten-day domestic total of $41.2 million and a worldwide total of $86.9 million, on a skimpy $9 million budget.

In fourth place was the faith-based drama BREAKTHROUGH with $6.3 million, down by 44% from last weekend for a 12-day domestic total of $26.1 million and $33.7 million worldwide on a reported $14 million cost.

SHAZAM! was in fifth place with $5.5 million, taking DC Comics' superhero to a domestic total of $131.1 million after four weekends. The red-suited Zachary Levi magical entity has a worldwide total of $346.3 million on a reported $100 million cost.

The lower half of the list struggled against the onslaught of superpowered activity, with PG-13 comedy LITTLE in sixth with $3.4 million for a $35.8 million domestic total and $42.4 million worldwide (on a reported $20 million cost).

Disney's live-action DUMBO was in seventh place with $3.2 million as director Tim Burton's $170 million remake has reached $107 million domestic and $327.6 million worldwide.

R-rated horror duo PET SEMATARY and US followed in eighth and ninth place, while Disney's documentary PENGUINS climbed into tenth place with $1 million for a domestic total of $5.7 million.

Outside the chart, the stop-motion animated Bigfoot comedy MISSING LINK roamed out of sight and the R-rated HELLBOY adaptation returned to the underworld.

Next weekend introduces a few brave releases trying to pry attention away from Marvel's monumental movie, with Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron hooking up in the romcom LONG SHOT, Dennis Quaid menacing a young couple in THE INTRUDER, and toys coming to animated life in UGLYDOLLS.
