Still Furious!
FURIOUS 7 has maintained velocity after a month in theaters, remaining on top at the box office this weekend with an estimated $18.3 million!
With $1.32 billion in the bank worldwide, director James Wan's car chaos has zipped past IRON MAN 3 and Disney's FROZEN to become the fifth highest-grossing release in history. And besides FURIOUS 7, only James Cameron's TITANIC and AVATAR have made more than $1 billion of their totals strictly from international box office.
Speaking of overseas audiences, many areas around the world were treated to the release of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON this weekend, and it assembled $201.2 million so far (the first AVENGERS made $185.1 million the weekend before its North American release). We'll see if it defeats the first movie's record-setting $207.4 million domestic opening next week.
Back on the domestic front, the Kevin James sequel PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2 is spinning its Segway wheels in second place with $15.5 million, a modest drop of 35% from its opening last weekend.
Opening in third place was THE AGE OF ADALINE with $13.3 million. The new Blake Lively fantasy/romance/drama, also featuring Harrison Ford and "Game of Thrones" mercenary Michiel Huisman, seemed to charm moviegoers ('A-' CinemaScore) more than critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes).
The animated family movie HOME held onto fourth place with $8.3 million, while the low-budget social media horror flick UNFRIENDED scrolled past it to fifth with $6.2 million, down 60% from its opening last weekend.
Alex Garland's sci-fi story EX MACHINA strutted out of limited release onto another 1200 screens, and gathered $5.4 million to land in sixth place.
The Nicholas Sparks adaptation THE LONGEST RIDE was in seventh, followed by the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart comedy GET HARD (which crossed $100 million worldwide), Disney's documentary MONKEY KINGDOM, and the Helen Mirren drama WOMAN IN GOLD to close out the Top 10.
Outside the chart, CINDERELLA and THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT both checked out. The religious WWII drama LITTLE BOY opened on just over 1000 screens for $2.8 million, while Russell Crowe's directorial debut THE WATER DIVINER was released on 320 screens for $1.2 million (it has already made around $25 million overseas).
Next weekend officially kicks off summer movie season by bringing Marvel's greatest heroes together once again for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.
