Shazam! still shocks the top!
For a second weekend, DC Comics' magically endowed superhero was the biggest box office attraction as SHAZAM! remained in first place with an estimated $25.1 million!
Zachary Levi's lightning-throwing champion dropped by 53% from its opening last weekend, an improvement on the second weekends of fellow DC Comics adaptations JUSTICE LEAGUE (-56%) and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (-69%) but not as impressive as the holds for AQUAMAN (-23%) or WONDER WOMAN (-43%).
Young Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his red-garbed mythology-powered counterpart have amassed a ten-day domestic total of $94.9 million, and a worldwide total of $221.2 million (on a reported cost of $100 million).
Opening in second place was the new PG-13 comedy LITTLE with $15.4 million for the weekend.
The BIG-style fantasy, in which Regina Hall suddenly bounces back into her 13-year-old self (played by Marsai Martin of TV's "Black-ish"), cost a reported $20 million.
Critics were divided on the body-swapping antics, giving the movie a 49% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third place was the R-rated update of HELLBOY with an opening weekend of $12 million.
Unrelated to the Ron Perlman incarnation, the new gore-filled comic adaptation from director Neil Marshall (THE DESCENT) couldn't lock horns with the openings of filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's versions — the original HELLBOY opened to $23.1 million in 2004 and the sequel HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY got started with $34.5 million in 2008.
Led by "Stranger Things" star David Harbour as the titular demon (and also featuring Daniel Dae Kim, Ian McShane and Milla Jovovich), the latest rendition of the big red monster-killer cost a reported $50 million.
Critics didn't particularly care for the carnage-covered relaunch of creator Mike Mignola's character, giving the movie a 15% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Blaze on over to the JoBlo review HERE.
The adaptation of Stephen King's PET SEMATARY was in fourth place with $10 million, buried by 59% from its opening last weekend. The R-rated horror movie with John Lithgow and Jason Clarke has a ten-day domestic total of $41.1 million and $76.8 million worldwide, on a reported cost of $21 million.
Disney's PG-rated live-action DUMBO fluttered down to fifth place with $9.1 million. On its third weekend, director Tim Burton's $170 million version of the flying-elephant fairy tale has a domestic total of $89.9 million and a worldwide total of $266.9 million.
Noble warrior hero CAPTAIN MARVEL was in sixth place with $8.6 million over its sixth weekend, rising to a domestic total of $386.5 million as it rockets toward the $389 million domestic finish of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. Marvel's galactic champion and theoretical Thanos-vanquisher has collected a stellar $1.06 billion on a reported $170 million cost.
Writer-director Jordan Peele's horror movie US was in seventh place with $6.9 million. The R-rated thriller's lethal doppelgangers have hit a domestic total of $163.4 million and $236 million worldwide after five weekends (it cost a reported $20 million).
Opening in eighth place was the new romance AFTER with $6.2 million for the weekend.
Adapted from Anna Todd's best-selling novel, the PG-13 drama with Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (nephew of Joseph and Ralph Fiennes) cost a reported $14 million.
Critics certainly weren't passionate about the tale of young love, giving the movie a 13% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
In ninth place was the new PG-rated animated comedy MISSING LINK with an opening weekend of $5.8 million.
Featuring the voices of Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, and Zach Galifianakis as the hairy main character, the latest stop-motion effort from Laika come out at the bottom for the studio's creations behind the $12.6 million opening of KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS in 2016.
Critics were mostly delighted by the globetrotting journey of the mythical Bigfoot, giving the movie an average of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can amble over to the JoBlo review HERE.
Closing out the list was the Sam Rockwell /Taraji P. Henson racism drama THE BEST OF ENEMIES with $2 million. The PG-13 fact-based story has a ten-day domestic total of $8.1 million on a reported $10 million cost.
Outside the chart, teen drama FIVE FEET APART vacated along with animated duo WONDER PARK and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD and the anti-abortion drama UNPLANNED.
And several months after it first stepped on the cinematic stage, the Queen biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY has rocked its way past $900 million worldwide (on a $55 million reported cost).
Next weekend delivers the James Wan-produced supernatural horror movie THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA, plus Disney's nature documentary PENGUINS and the faith-based drama BREAKTHROUGH (both on Wednesday).
