Furious 7 makes fast cash!
The franchise's fine-tuned entertainment engines kept FURIOUS 7 at the top of the box office for a second weekend with an estimated $60.5 million!
Although that figure is down nearly 60% from its opening last week, FURIOUS 7's 10-day total of $252.5 million already makes it the biggest release in the series, passing the $238.6 million domestic finish line of FAST & FURIOUS 6.
In addition, the latest installment of stunt-loaded vehicular lunacy has zoomed to $800 million worldwide, also putting it beyond FAST & FURIOUS 6's $788.7 million worldwide total and making it a likely candidate to become the first billion-grossing blockbuster of 2015.
The animated family feature HOME has found a home at #2 for a second week with another $19 million, for a domestic total of $129.5 million and a global total of $240.5 million.
Opening in third was the romance THE LONGEST RIDE with $13.5 million, which seems somewhere in the middle for a Nicholas Sparks adaptation (last October's THE BEST OF ME started with $10 million, and before that SAFE HAVEN opened to $21.4 million). The target audience swooned to Clint-spawn Scott Eastwood with an 'A' CinemaScore, but critics didn't feel the love with 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In fourth place, the R-rated Kevin Hart/Will Ferrell comedy GET HARD made another $8.6 million and has accumulated $71.2 million so far. Disney's live-action CINDERELLA was behind it with $7.2 million, followed by THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT with $6.8 million and a $250 million worldwide total (which still trails the first movie's $288.7 million).
The rest of the chart consisted of movies that had expanded from limited release. The Helen Mirren/Ryan Reynolds historical drama WOMAN IN GOLD was pushed onto 1500 screens for $5.8 million, and the critical fave horror movie IT FOLLOWS was in eighth for $2 million on its third week in semi-wide release.
After that, the Al Pacino showcase DANNY COLLINS jumped into the Top 10 with $1.6 million after adding 650 screens, and the Ben Stiller/Noah Baumbach reunion WHILE WE'RE YOUNG pulled in $1.3 million on 246 screens.
Outside the chart, THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, DO YOU BELIEVE? and KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (now at nearly $400 million worldwide) were nudged aside. In limited release, Alex Garland's sci-fi effort EX MACHINA had an excellent $62k per-screen average, the Kristen Stewart/Julette Binoche drama CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA started with $23k per-screen, and Ryan Gosling's directing debut LOST RIVER (also now on VOD) had a $13k per-screen average.
Next weekend brings the Tom Hardy thriller CHILD 44, the Segway-patrolling sequel PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2, Disney's simian documentary MONKEY KINGDOM, the online horror tale UNFRIENDED, and the James Franco/Jonah Hill drama TRUE STORY.
