Gerard Butler kills the competition!

Secret Service agent Mike Banning was back in action this weekend and put ANGEL HAS FALLEN at the top of the box office with an estimated opening of $21.2 million!

Gerard Butler's third time out as the skull-stabbing government protector nearly matched the $21.6 million opening for previous entry LONDON HAS FALLEN, which continued to $62.5 million domestic and $205.8 million worldwide in 2016 on a budget of $60 million.

The original OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN started out with $30.3 million back in 2013, before capping off at $98.9 million domestic and $170 million worldwide on a reported $70 million cost.

Directed by former stuntman Ric Roman Waugh (SNITCH), the new R-rated sequel with Danny Huston, Jada Pinkett-Smith and President Morgan Freeman cost a reported $40 million.

Critics didn't seem overly thrilled with Butler's violent efforts to clear his wrongfully accused agent, giving the movie a 39% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Shoot on over to the JoBlo review HERE.

In second place was the R-rated comedy GOOD BOYS with $11.7 million, ditching 45% of business from its first-place opening last weekend. The $20 million party quest from producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg has a ten-day domestic total of $42 million and a worldwide total of $48.9 million.

Opening in third place was the new PG-rated drama OVERCOMER with $8.2 million. The latest faith-based feature from actor/writer/director Alex Kendrick (WAR ROOM, FIREPROOF) cost a reported $5 million.

Disney's realistically animated remake of THE LION KING was in fourth place with $8.1 million on its sixth weekend. With a domestic total of $510.6 million, the PG-rated animal journey has crawled over the $504 million finish of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to become Disney's highest-grossing "reimagining", as well as the biggest musical of all time.

Excluding the realms of the Disney-owned Pixar, Marvel and STAR WARS, the Jon Favreau-directed update has also become the company's biggest domestic and global release as it has reached a worldwide total of $1.5 billion (on a reported $250 million cost).

Skidding into fifth place was the PG-13 spinoff FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW with $8.1 million. After four weekends, director David Leitch's $200 million action opus with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham has walloped its way to $147 million domestic and $588.9 million worldwide (thanks in part to a $102 million opening weekend in China), dusting the totals of the original THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS ($144 million domestic and $363 million worldwide in 2001).

In sixth place was the new R-rated horror movie READY OR NOT with an opening weekend of $7.5 million.

The $6 million thriller, with Samara Weaving (THE BABYSITTER) as a newlywed being hunted by her in-laws on wedding night, has a domestic total of $10.5 million since it opened on Wednesday.

Critics were rooting for the bride to escape the bloody mess of matrimony, giving the movie an 87% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Say "I do" to the JoBlo review HERE.

Swooping to seventh place was the animated sequel THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 with $6.3 million. The PG-rated videogame adaptation dipped by 38% from last weekend for a domestic total of $27 million and a worldwide total of $74.6 million, on a reported cost of $65 million.

The PG-13 horror-thriller SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK was in eighth place with $6 million for a domestic total of $50.4 million on its third weekend. The $28 million book adaptation from producer Guillermo del Toro and director Andre Ovredal has a worldwide total of $72 million.

DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD explored ninth place with $5.2 million as the PG-rated live-action version of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon hit a domestic total of $43 million and a worldwide total of $60.4 million, on a reported cost of $49 million.

At the bottom was the R-rated comedy-drama ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD with $5 million. After five weekends, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino's latest has a domestic total of $123.1 million, scalping the $120 million finish of his INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS in 2009. The $90 million period piece with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie currently has a worldwide total of $239.8 million.

Outside the chart, the shark thriller 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED sank out of sight along with the Springsteen-influenced comedy-drama BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (both after one weekend on the list), while the dog drama THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN went to a farm upstate.

The PG-13 comedy THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON expanded from limited release to 991 screens for a $3 million weekend. The $6 million adventure with Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Fanning and newcomer Zack Gottsagen currently has a superb 95% average from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).

The limited release of the new R-rated Jillian Bell comedy BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON had a strong per-screen average of $35k, along with some positive critical responses with 88% on Rotten Tomatoes (check out the JoBlo review HERE).

Next weekend quietly finishes out the summer movie season with the David Oyelowo thriller DON'T LET GO.
