Weekend Box-Office: July 13-15, 2012

Crowds catch the drift of Ice Age 4!

It might have been a huge weekend for superheroes at San Diego Comic Con, but not at the box office.

After one weekend, the wall-crawling wonder known as THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN was knocked from his perch atop the box office by a gang of wandering prehistoric creatures as ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT took #1 with $46 million.

The fourth in the ICE AGE franchise had a better debut than the last entry ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS ($41.6M), and that one ended up with close to $200M domestic. But overseas markets are really where it’s at for Ray Romano’s mammoth and his CG crew — CONTINENTAL DRIFT has already made an additional $339M since it opened internationally, and DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS ended up with a colossal $886M global total.

As for Spidey, unlike other Marvel heroes this summer ol’ webhead couldn’t cling to the #1 position for more than a single weekend in theaters. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN dropped around 44% from last week with another $35 million, but has scaled past $200 million domestic after 13 days in theaters. The reboot has also already hit the half-billion mark in global box office, so no doubt the studio is cheering their ability to prevent the character’s movie rights from reverting back to Marvel…

An adorably vulgar teddy bear turned out to be a worthwhile risk for Universal, as Seth MacFarlane’s (mostly) live-action directing debut TED grabs another $22.1 million and hits a $158.9M total. Seems like a good guess that we’ll see more of Mark Wahlberg’s fuzzy hedonistic companion at some point. And Pixar’s BRAVE remains in the top half of the charts, nocking another $10.6 million for its total.

MAGIC MIKE is still firm in number 5 with another $9 million, and Channing Tatum’s stripper story looks destined to swagger past the $100 million mark. Not quite as hardy was Taylor Kitsch’s third starring role of 2012, the Oliver Stone action-drama SAVAGES, which drops to sixth with $8.7M. TYLER PERRY’S MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION is now the third highest-grossing Madea movie, so expect the actor-director to slip on the wig and fat suit yet again.

KATY PERRY: PART OF ME and MOONRISE KINGDOM hold their spots from last week, but Wes Anderson’s movie is actually still slowly expanding onto more screens and is now the filmmaker’s second-biggest movie after THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, which finished with $52.3M. The wild things of MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED are preparing to roam off the chart, but not before they crossed $200M (and $270M more from overseas).

Next weekend features one single massive release, director Christopher Nolan’s anticipated trilogy-topper THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. How much do you think THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will make on its opening weekend? VOTE HERE!
