Weekend Box-Office: February 11-13, 2011

The first month of 2011 was a disaster
in terms of box-office figures, but thanks to Adam Sandler and a
cute short Canadian kid with a goofy haircut, things have picked
up tremendously during the 2nd week of February as both JUST GO
WITH IT and JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER, scored openings of
over $30M respectively! As of today, Sandler’s film is a little
ahead, but remember that the Sunday numbers are just
“estimates”, so things might change once the
“actual figures” are announced on Monday.

Either way, both films are
already considered successful, especially the Bieber film which
apparently only cost $13M to put together. Does that mean we can
expect a “sequel” soon? God help us all. If you’re
someone who gives 2 craps about Bieber and his rabid fanbase,
check out the craziness that occurs when the
Biebs “surprises” a roomful of fans prepping to watch
his movie. Yipes. Sandler, on the other hand, just keeps on
trucking despite extremely
negative reviews on this film and his last film, GROWN-UPS
(that film ended up making $162M — the 2nd highest gross of his
career, right behind BIG DADDY’s $163M). I dig Sandler and most of
his films, but he’s starting to release crap at this point, so I
wish he would slow down a little and get back to creating original
comedies, not just 90-minute time-fillers (i.e. mortgage payments
for his friends).

The other 2 films that were released this past
week also did very well, especially GNOMEO & JULIET, an
animated film that made close to $26M and became the highest
grossing animated February release of all-time! THE EAGLE also
managed a decent opening in 4th place with close to $9M. Also, I’m
not sure how this bodes for the Oscars coming up on February 27th,
but THE KING’S SPEECH is now in its 12th week of release, and is
still hanging around in the top 10. In fact, It’s still making
decent returns with $7M added to its coffers this past weekend,
bringing its total closer to the $100M mark (it currently sits at
$93M). People love watching rich royals with stutters, I guess. I
tease.

The 4 films to get booted from the top 10 this
weekend include THE RITE ($29M), THE MECHANIC ($25M), BLACK SWAN
($99M) and THE DILEMMA ($48M). The latter film can be considered
the most disappointing with all those “names” in the
cast, Ron Howard as the director and its $70M price tag. I’m
looking forward to seeing Vince Vaughn in a good movie
again one day.

Next week sees the release of 3 new movies
including Liam Neeson’s seeming return to the world of TAKEN, in a
film called UNKNOWN,
which looks a lot like the former film (which grossed a massive
$145M in January of 2009). Let’s just say, he’s “hunting
down” people again here. Good shit! The last film from the
unpredictable director DJ Caruso is some kind of teen sci-fi movie
called I
AM NUMBER FOUR. Caruso is hit-and-miss as he has created
some cool flicks like DISTURBIA and THE SALTON SEA, but also
pieces of shit like TAKING LIVES, TWO FOR THE MONEY and EAGLE EYE.
Not sure how this one will turn out, but on the surface, it ain’t
looking promising. And finally, Martin Lawrence is back, people!
The film is called BIG
MOMMA’S: LIKE FATHER LIKE SON. ‘Nuff said. So which film
do you think will be #1 next weekend? VOTE
