While no news has been made official, there seem to be some hints that Wedding Crashers 2 is actually slated to start production this August in Puerto Rico. The news comes from a newly revealed production listing.
The production listing states that Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Isla Fisher, and Rachel McAdams are slated to return while the original director, David Dobkin, is also back at the helm. The listing also gives the impression that the film will be released on the HBO Max streaming service. You can check out the production listing below!
Talk of a Wedding Crashers sequel has certainly heated up in the last year. David Dobkin has said previously that a sequel could explore "what it'd be like for guys in their late 40s who end up being single again and have to go back out in the world. What a weird, difficult, challenging story that is. And as long as there's a real story in the middle of it, to me, it can be a movie." These comments were made back in June of last year and then while promoting Freaky, Vince Vaughn confirmed that a sequel was in early development during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. At that time Vaughn said "Owen [Wilson] and I and the director of Crashers have been talking for the first time seriously [about] a sequel to that movie. So there has been an idea that is pretty good. So we are talking about that in the early stages." Is it possible this idea has come together faster than anticipated? If this production listing is to be believed, this may very well be the case.
Wedding Crashers is arguably one of the best comedies to come out in the last 15 years. The film followed John Beckwith and Jeremy Klein, a pair of divorce attorneys played by Wilson and Vaughn. The duo are womanizing party animals that crash weddings to meet women but things become complicated when John unexpectedly falls in love with a bridesmaid at a high-end wedding that happens to be engaged. Back in 2005, the film became one of the biggest success stories of the summer and the whole year. Made for $40 million, the comedy went on to gross $209.2 million at the domestic box office and critics dug it too with a solid 76% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film came out during the height of the powers of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson and it also debuted as Rachel McAdams was blowing up after Mean Girls and The Notebook. Throw in some fun supporting turns from Isla Fisher, Bradley Cooper, Christopher Walken, and Jane Seymour, you really had the perfect storm of comedic success.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this since sequels to comedies are usually a miss and it has been a bit too long, in my opinion, for this sequel to happen but if they feel like they have a solid idea, I'm at least willing to be optimistic about its prospects.
