2020 brought a lot of talk of Wedding Crashers 2 and all of that talk came to a head when Vince Vaughn, while promoting his recent film Freaky, revealed that a sequel was indeed in the early development phase. Vaughn and company seem to have an idea they're happy with developing and there is one scene-stealing star from the original film that is down to return if that idea includes her.
Isla Fisher played the overly possessive but adorable psycho Gloria in the 2005 film and while speaking with "ComicBook.com", the actress revealed that she would love the opportunity to return:
"I would 100%, 100% be down. I think there is a ton of comedy to be minced in that set up. I think those two have such a great, natural chemistry. I loved playing a bipolar nymphomaniac. It would be really fun to go step back into that role that sort of made me lucky enough to be cast in fantastic movies like [Godmothered]. Yeah, it'd be great fun!"
Wedding Crashers is arguably one of the best comedies to come out in the last 15 years. Back in 2005, the film became one of the biggest success stories of the summer and the whole year. Made for $40 million, the comedy went on to gross $209.2 million at the domestic box office and critics dug it too with a solid 76% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film came out during the height of the powers of Vince Vaugh and Owen Wilson and it also debuted as Rachel McAdams was blowing up after Mean Girls and The Notebook. Throw in some fun supporting turns from Isla Fisher, Bradley Cooper, Christopher Walken, and Jane Seymour, you really had the perfect storm of comedic success.
It was just recently that Vaughn confirmed during an interview with Entertainment Tonight that the sequel has moved beyond tossing around ideas and they are in early talks on a concept that they seem pretty happy about:
"Owen [Wilson] and I and the director of Crashers have been talking for the first time seriously [about] a sequel to that movie. So there has been an idea that is pretty good. So we are talking about that in the early stages."
Before Vaughn did the Entertainment Tonight interview, he elaborated on why he never wanted to make a sequel but an idea from David Dobkin had him interested in the opportunity:
"David Dobkin had a really good idea that's contemporary. I never went and made a sequel to a lot of these films at the time because it felt like we were just chasing a success. But what I like about where Crashers could potentially be at is [that] there's something that is of this moment that feels really good… a lot of these comedies, even something like Wedding Crashers, you're sort of investigating things that I think are real in our lives, but the comedy is an overcommitment to the absurd."
I would love to see Isla Fisher somehow thrown back into this mix because she's arguably one of the funniest characters in the first film. I'm not sure where she would fit into the new narrative proposed by Dobkin which he says could explore "what it'd be like for guys in their late 40s who end up being single again and have to go back out in the world." Hell, I'd even settle for a fun Isla Fisher cameo if possible.
Would YOU want Isla Fisher to return in Wedding Crashers 2?
