The holiday movie season doesn't get much more heart-tugging/tear-jerking than WONDER, the inspirational story of a small boy named Auggie Pullman, who was born with a rare facial deformity that has made him the uncomfortable focus of attention whenever he's outside (and without his protective astronaut helmet). When we meet him, Auggie has entered the age where it's time to start going to a real school and interacting with real peers, which will test his resolve and open up the hearts of his skeptical new classmates.
Based on the bestseller by R.J. Palacio, WONDER was directed by Stephen Chbosky (THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER) and stars Jacob Tremblay as Auggie, Julia Roberts as Auggie's resolute mother, Owen Wilson as Auggie's optimistic dad, Izabela Vidovic as his conflicted sister and Hamilton star Daveed Diggs as his new teacher. The film opens on November 17th.
Recently I had a chance to sit down with the main cast and creative team in London, and all seemed genuinely happy to be a part of such a warm-hearted film. We should start with Jacob Tremblay and Izabela Vidovic, the two impressive young stars of WONDER. Tremblay is splendid in the role, especially considering all of the make-up he wears on his face; his status as one of the best child stars in Hollywood is not in trouble after this. Vidovic is just as good, in a role that's just as tricky: the sister who is almost an afterthought thanks to Auggie. I spoke to the precocious duo about the challenges of their roles, having Roberts and Wilson play their folks, and the inspirational messages of WONDER.
You couldn't ask for a more charismatic pair of on-screen parents than Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. The actors are at their magnetic best in the movie, and were just as charming in person. We spoke about the short time they got to spend with the kids before production on the film, acting opposite a youngster like Tremblay, and their favorite scenes in the film.
Finally, we have an interview compilation with actor Daveed Diggs, co-writer/director Stephen Chbosky and the book's author, R.J. Palacio. For Diggs, WONDER is his first film, but he's already closing in on being a well-known face thanks to his breakout role in Hamilton. We spoke about playing the film's embodiment of compassion, the differences between acting for the stage versus the big screen, his crazy life these last few years and more. As for the writer and director, we talk about bringing the book to life, assembling the great cast and more!
