Based on the trailers, you might assume THE GENTLEMEN is a return for Guy Ritchie to the kind of over-the-top comedic gangster film he made 20 years ago. But this movie is no LOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS or SNATCH. THE GENTLEMEN, about a drug kingpin Matthew McConaughey) looking to call it quits and sell his business, is a darker, more somber variation of the genre, perhaps a reflection of Ritchie's age and growth as a filmmaker.
Officially, the film follows American expat Mickey Pearson (McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.
I recently had the opportunity to interview the main cast of Ritchie's film and drink a little bourbon with Matthew McConaughey. Felt like a gentleman being around these folks, I won't lie.
First up: Matthew McConaughey, Michelle Dockery (who plays Matthew's wife and business partner) and Henry Golding (who plays the film's main antagonist) and I sat around, had a few drinks, and talked about the appeal of these dastardly characters, an action-packed scene between Golding and Dockery, playing the heavy and more! (Plus, stay for McConaughey's impersonation of Hugh Grant!)
Next up, Charlie Hunnam (who plays McConaughey's right hand man) and Hugh Grant (who plays a sleazy journalist looking to blackmail the gangsters), two of the classiest chaps you'll ever meet. We spoke about the atmosphere of a Guy Ritchie set, the chemistry between them in the film, who would make the best criminal mastermind and more!
