We're just a few short weeks away from the end of the year — and the 2010s entirely — and what better way to bring in the new decade and celebrate the holidays with family than with the new explosive action movie from the master of explosions, Michael Bay. The director has joined the world of streaming with his new movie, 6 UNDERGROUND, and brought with him an ensemble that includes Ryan Reynolds, Mélanie Laurent, Dave Franco, Corey Hawkins, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Adria Arjona and Ben Hardy. The trailers and Reynolds himself have teased Bay's latest at the most Michael Bay movie that's ever been Bayed. As impossible as that sounds — given movies like BAD BOYS II, TRANSFORMERS and more — I can say with complete confidence and a melted mind that it's all true. Everything you know and love about Bay's work is dialed to 15 here, featuring more violence, crass humor, people looking cool in shades and quick cuts than ever before. It's exhausting (ly awesome), and I got a chance to fly down to Brazil during CCXP to chat with some of the cast, and ask what it was like to step into the world of Bay…and come out alive.
First up, I spoke with Garcia-Rulfo, Reynolds, and Arjona — who along with the rest of the main cast play characters with cool, digit-based codenames. Reynolds is the leader of the group, One, with Garcia-Rulfo and Arjona playing Three and Five. While Reynolds is no stranger to over-the-top, expensive blockbusters (DEADPOOL, GREEN LANTERN, THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD, GREEN LANTERN, R.I.P.D. and GREEN LANTERN), I wanted to know what it was like stepping onto a set like Bay's, and according to all of them, his directing style is precisely how you would imagine it to be. And yet, as crazy as it all may be, it seems easy to be wrapped up in the spectacle of it all.
Next, I sat down with Laurent and Hawkins, both of whom play the characters with the most experience with weapons and being badasses in general. Like with the gang above, I wanted to know what it was like to step onto a Michael Bay set, and what it was like to get the intense training required to do all the action sequences. Hawkins has had some action experience starring in the new run of 24, and also in the blockbuster KONG: SKULL ISLAND, but Laurent (INGLORIOUS BASTERDS) has never done anything like this before, but something tells me she seemed to enjoy it quite a bit.
6 UNDERGROUND is on Netflix now, and you can read Paul's review of the movie right here!
