It's oftentimes the little hidden gems that really shine during the summer movie months. This year there have been a handful of really great independent films, and this weekend sees the release of yet another treat. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is the perfect summer film. Compelling and heartfelt, Matt Ross brilliantly brings this complex and inspired tale of family and loss to life. The cast is stunning. Viggo Mortensen, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Zahn and Frank Langella are all terrific under Ross' sublime direction. There is something really special about this unique and charming story.
The great Kathryn Hahn may only have a small role in the film, but she sure is terrific here. It's always nice to see her in more dramatic material. She talked about playing a character that could've easily been seen as a villain, yet here she is far more kind and understanding. The actress is also one of the most amazing people you will ever meet. Funny, genuine, and just downright terrific, she puts a smile on your face the second you walk in to speak with her.
Finally, some of the real stars of CAPTAIN FANTASTIC are the young talent portraying Mr. Mortensen's children. We spoke to Annalise Basso, Samantha Isler and Shree Crooks, and they were an absolute joy to talk to. They discussed taking on their roles, which included rock climbing, hunting and a few other unusual job requirments. This is a truly inspired film that will tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh and make you think. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC opens in limited release, but I urge you to seek it out if you'd like to see something really special.
