Bryan Cranston is one of the best actors working today. From Breaking Bad to TRUMBO, this talented fellow alwasy gives audiences an incredible performance. Yet Cranston isn't a stranger to comedy. After all, he found success on the series Malcolm in the Middle, so it's actually refreshing to see him go for laughs once again. In his latest, WHY HIM? he faces off against a massively successful web designer – played by James Franco – who has a strange way of dealing with others. The comedy also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Griffin Gluck, Megan Mullally, Cedric the Entertainer and Zoey Deutch.
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Franco and Cranston, as well as the rest of the cast, to talk about the new feature. Cranston opened up about returning to comedy and playing off of Franco. When I asked James about how much of the role connects to him, he smiled and made sure to add that this crazy character was not like him necessarily, but a lot of fun to play. The two discussed the improvisation that went into it, including a very funny scene involving an especially fancy toilet.
When it came to keeping things a little more grounded, director John Hamburg (I LOVE YOU, MAN) discussed the humor and just how to approach it. He talked about being a father himself, and while he hasn't dealt with seeing who his child dates, the fears are already setting in. The filmmaker opened up about working with this talented crew, especially the film's two leads.
Finally, we sat down with the rest of the cast, and what a delight they all were. Together, Key, Deutch and Mullally wanted to lighten the mood so they made up a fun song about JoBlo.com. From then on it was way too much fun. Megan talked about playing off of Cranston, as did Deutch. Key also talked about one of the more hilarious actions that his character was involved in and it was one of the brightest spots in the film. After that, we sat down with Cedric the Entertainer and Griffin Gluck, both of whom had some of the crudest lines in the movie. In fact, one of Gluck's lines may have people horrified by a Google search.
Oh, and let's not forget Zoe Deutch, Keegan-Michael Key, and Megan Mullaly serenading us with their own version of the JoBlo song!
Oh, and check out our exclusive clip from the film below! WHY HIM? opens this Wednesday at a theater near you.
