Nothing is safe from the remake treatment, as Jorge Michel Grau’s WE ARE WHAT WE ARE is the next one up to get the ‘Americanized’ treatment.
Jim Mickle, director of STAKE LAND has signed on the direct the remake for Memento Films International. He is currently co-writing the script with Nick Damici, it is set to start principal photography in June. The original Mexico City setting will now be the Catskill region of New York State.
Mickle commented “It’s a cool challenge to do justice to Jorge’s story, but also explore things from an unexpected angle.”
Jorge Michel Grau also had something to say with “I feel fortunate to have someone with the vision and talent Jim has to re-interpret my work. It is extraordinary to have a team of filmmakers so respectful of the spirit of a film and take such good care of its essence. I’m so proud to know We Are What We Are will be reworked under that kind of intelligent frame of mind. Very happy that Jim will construct a new universe over the bases of mine.”
Can’t argue that, he seems satisfied and has given Mickle his seal of approval. We shall have more news of this as it surfaces.
Original film’s synopsis: A middle-aged man dies in the street, leaving his widow and three children destitute. The devastated family is confronted not only with his loss but with a terrible challenge – how to survive. For they are cannibals. They have always existed on a diet of human flesh consumed in bloody ritual ceremonies… and the victims have always been provided by the father. Now that he is gone, who will hunt? Who will lead them? How will they sate their horrific hunger? The task falls to the eldest son, Alfredo, a teenage misfit who seems far from ready to accept the challenge… But without human meat the family will die.
