An excellent interview with Saturday Night Live alum Dana Carvey is making the rounds after the 67-year-old comedian said he’s game for Wayne’s World 3. Carvey spoke with People on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where his former SNL castmate Adam Sandler received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. While taking a break from the event, People asked Carvey if Wayne’s World 3 could happen. Carvey said he’s “always game” to team up with Myers for another film based on the Aurora misfits and their hard-rockin’ adventures.
“Yes, it is,” Carvey said when asked if a third Wayne’s World movie is possible. “I don’t know. Maybe we’ll do it in puppets. I’m not sure.”
Okay, Carvey. Now that you’ve put the idea into the world, who do I have to bribe to get Wayne’s World 3 with puppets off the ground? What are Brian Henson and his team at the Jim Henson Company up to? If any of you have their number let me know. I’ll make the call.
“I’m always game,” Carvey added. “Love Mike Myers. Just a brilliant guy.”
Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2 were based on the iconic SNL skit of the same name, featuring Myers and Carvey as Wayne and Garth, respectively. The SNL routines and the movies featured the duo starring in a cable access show of unpredictable proportions. While the original saw Wayne and Garth making a break for the big time, the sequel found the duo staging a Woodstock-like concert with bands like Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, and Van Halen attending.
Wayne’s World grossed $183 million against a $20 million budget, making the movie a tremendous success. Wayne’s World 2 grossed $48M+ worldwide, a fraction of the original’s earnings. Despite lackluster reviews and box office returns, I still love Wayne’s World 2. Fight me!
“There was no guarantee that that movie was going to get made or released. So 30 years on, I can’t believe,” Myers told People at an anniversary event for Wayne’s World last year. “Wayne and Garth had less than anybody in the town. They drove a horrible car. They lived with their parents. They had no money, but they’re having more fun than anyone in the town,” Myers added. “It’s a very light movie, ultimately.”
Do you think Myers and Carvey should reunite for Wayne’s World 3? If Bill and Ted can face the music decades after their last film, maybe Wayne and Garth can also recapture the magic.
