With his choices in roles over the last decade, I am sure you can all agree that we would like to be the ones punching Robert De Niro in the face. The guy almost seems to be accepting each and every role without hesitation. In the past year alone he has starred in NEW YEAR’S EVE, BEING FLYNN, FREELANCERS (with 50 Cent!), and RED LIGHTS. All varied genres and quality and none up to the standard of this film icon.
Add to that pile this painfully unfunny trailer for THE BIG WEDDING. I swear, the moment I started watching it I fully expected to see the tagline “From the creators of MEET THE PARENTS and SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE”. Yet I would rather watch both of those movies over this one.
Plot: THE BIG WEDDING is an uproarious romantic comedy about a charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son’s wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future – and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process. Screenplay by Justin Zackham. Directed by Justin Zackham.
Any time they mention the word “uproarious” in the plot synopsis, you know it is a downright lie. The sad thing is with a cast this good, the movie should be at least somewhat funny! I mean, you have two of the main stars of the f**king GODFATHER films!
THE BIG WEDDING stars Robert DeNiro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, The film was written and directed by Justin Zackham.
THE BIG WEDDING opens on October 26, 2012.
