We all know that a villain can make or break a movie. Thus far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe we've seen our heroes contend with some interesting (and controversial) villains. From IRON MAN's Obediah Stane, IRON MAN 2's Whiplash, IRON MAN 3's Mandarin (kind of) CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER's Red Skull, THOR's Loki, and THE AVENGERS'…Loki again, we now have a new baddie on the chopping block for THOR: THE DARK WORLD with Malekith, the dark elf played by Christopher Eccleston, who is a maniacal mofo in the comics and a serious thorn in the God of Thunder's side. Today, IGN debuted a clip from the latest Marvel film, showing the awakening of Malekith, which caused me to get a little giddy in seeing a new Marvel villain grace the big screen.
Awaken:
Although Loki will play a large role in THOR: THE DARK WORLD and will likely turn against Thor at some point (there's never a time he doesn't in the comics) I'm hoping to see more from Malekith and a venture into the wider universe of the nine realms, which can easily bring forth a number of Thor's foils from the past. I have a good feeling that the book will be closed on Loki for a while after THOR: THE DARK WORLD and I think that's the right move and a consistent one with Marvel lore. There's nothing like "killing someone off" and bringing them back later in the game.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Jamie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Rene Russo, and Kat Dennings hits theaters on November 8, 2013.
