A lot of buzz has been generated for the Ryan Gosling/Bradley Cooper starrer THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES from director Derek Cianfrance. Some compare it to an arthouse thriller, others a pulpy crime pic, but either way it’s definitely got some heat. Our own review called it the best movie of 2013 so far, so there’s that. I still have yet to see the film, as it’s opened in limited release currently, but am looking forward to catching it when it hits my neck of the, er, pines.
So, today we have a look at the opening of the film, which carries on the tradition of long tracking shots with no breaks. The scene follows Gosling from one location to the next and if you have no idea what the movie is about or where it’s going then there’s certainly some suspense there. If nothing else, it’s just a nice use of a traditional aesthetic.
Let’s take a walk, shall we?:
