While Joss Whedon may be busy toiling away on a big-budget superhero flick known as AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON at the moment, he's found time to scribble a smaller film in the meantime. IN YOUR EYES, a microbudget romantic drama that stars Jennifer Grey, Nikki Reed, Steve Howey, Zoe Kazan, and Mark Feuerstein was written by Whedon and directed by Brin Hill, who debuted the film at the Tribeca Film Festival this past weekend. Now, the film is being released online for only $5, foregoing the usual distribution route and skipping over venues like iTunes, making it available on the official site only. Whedon issued a video announcement about the project being released worldwide from the set of AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON, whic you can check out below.
Here's the synopsis for IN YOUR EYES:
In the frozen East Coast winter, Rebecca (Kazan) is withering away in a life of cocktail parties and lonely nights as the sheltered, soft-spoken wife of a successful doctor. Across the country in sun-drenched, arid New Mexico, charismatic ex-con Dylan (Michael Stahl-David) is struggling to find his footing and a fresh start. When these polar opposites realize they share an inexplicable connection, a unique metaphysical romance begins.
The film is produced under Bellwether Pictures, which was founded by Joss Whedon and Kai Cole, and is labeled as "a micro-studio committed to creating quality independent films and utilizing modern tools of distribution to bring these titles directly to their audience." The intent was always to release the film online in this format to address the rapidly shifting landscape of film distribution, particularly for lower budget indies like this.
