Watch our Oscar “Best Picture” Retrospective for 2000 (video)

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

In this recurring series we take a look at the Oscar nominations of years past, examining the flicks that were nominated, as well as the pic we feel got snubbed among all the other candidates. Love ’em or hate ’em, the Oscars usually highlight the best films from each year (although there are plenty that get overlooked) and it’s always fun to look back and see what was popular for any given year and to contemplate their legacy in retrospect. This time we take a look at 2000’s nominees (for movies made in 1999), including Frank Darabont‘s THE GREEN MILE, Michael Mann‘s THE INSIDER, Lasse Hallstrom‘s THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, M. Night Shyamalan’s THE SIXTH SENSE, and Alan Ball‘s AMERICAN BEAUTY, as well as our Snub Pick of the Year!

2000 Nominees (for films released in 1999):

– THE GREEN MILE
– THE CIDER HOUSE RULES
– THE SIXTH SENSE
– THE INSIDER
– AMERICAN BEAUTY

Winner: AMERICAN BEAUTY

Snub: THE MATRIX
