Back in May, we passed along the exciting news that Ron Howard says that he still has plans to make a sequel to his creepy fantasy film WILLOW, which starred Warwick Davis (LEPRECHAUN) and Val Kilmer. Specifically, Howard said, "I don't want to give away too much, but there is a little talk of Willow. We wouldn't call it Willow 2; I think it would focus a lot on Elora Danan, although Willow would have to be significantly involved."
And if that WILLOW 2 news was enough to get you all excited for more adventures with trolls and monster dogs that look like huge rats with blood-lust eyes, then today's news should only fuel the fire as Willow himself Warwick Davis has chimed in with his thoughts on the possible sequel as well.
Warwick Davis:
That would be hugely exciting….revisiting Willow as a character, now he's older and wiser and perhaps even a better sorcerer, who knows by now, would be brilliant fun. I would absolutely love to do that. Ron and I we chatted about Willow quite a lot. Jon Kasdan who was obviously the screenwriter on Solo, he's a pretty big fan of Willow, it's one of the reasons he got into screenwriting and filmmaking. He and I talked a lot about where we could take Willow in the future.
He continues:
I remember a particular day which was very special on Solo. I was working with the second unit and Ron, and I got a message through saying "oh George [Lucas] is here today, he'd like to see you.' So I went on set, it was the day they were on the Falcon. I remember myself, George, Jon Kasdan, Kathy Kennedy all chatting about Willow. I would think 'this is like the stars have aligned right here. If anybody's going to get a sequel or something else made in regard to Willow, this is it and this is the time to do it.' Who knows, kind of watch this space, I guess.
I don't know if this new WILLOW flick will ever get off the ground myself. I hate to be a pessimist but considering everyone was probably all chummy-chummy on the set of SOLO makes sense… however the film then went on to be a… disappointment. This semi-bomb makes me think that any plans between Howard and Disney have fallen through. But what do I know! Bring on WILLOW 2!
