I didn't understand the sheer hardcore fanbase of the series Warrior until it was announced that the show was being renewed and moving from Cinemax to HBO Max. In all honesty, I had never heard of the show but once that news dropped, I had friends who came clean saying how much they loved the series and that HBO Max is going to be the perfect fit for it. Even though season 3 is already secured at HBO Max, fans are already campaigning for a season 4 renewal ahead of its third season debut on the streamer.
The campaign isn't the typical one that you see on social media via Twitter, although the platform has been utilized to bring awareness to the show. This is more of a grassroots movement where fans are asking for a fourth season through an advertisement that was taken out in "Variety" that urges Warner Bros. and HBO Max to confirm plans for the series to continue past season 3. The campaign is also meant to support the hashtag #StopAsianHate in order to combat the recent rise of racism and prejudice against the Asian community in America.
The original campaign first began in February as the series was lingering in limbo in regards to its season 3 renewal. Fans of the show flooded social media with various hashtags, including #SaveWarrior, and this culminated in the advertisement taken out in "Variety" that was addressed to WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar. The ad praises the decision to renew Warrior and goes on to ask the studio to continue to take steps to help create change in Hollywood. I think WarnerMedia will respond favorably to the campaign because Warrior has gradually built on its popularity since its debut in April of 2019. Critics and audiences alike have raved about the show across its two seasons that have already aired but I think things needed to be ironed out in regards to its move from Cinemax to HBO Max for a new season. Seasons one and two made their debut on the platform in January of this year and thanks to a push from HBO and HBO Max's Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys, Warrior has gone on to become one of the top 15 viewed series on the platform.
Warrior is based on an original concept and treatment from the late Bruce Lee and is set during the Tong Wars in the late 1870s San Francisco. The show centers on Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), a martial arts prodigy who emigrates from China in search of his sister, only to be sold to one of the most powerful tongs in Chinatown. Executive produced by Bruce Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee, the series also stars Olivia Cheng, Jason Torbin, Dianne Doan, and Joe Taslim.
