Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in 2008's THE DARK KNIGHT is widely considered one of the greatest performances of all-time and a lot of what made his performance so alluring was his enigmatic origins. The fact that we knew little to nothing about his version of the character allowed Ledger to explore facets of his psychological performance that wasn't weighed down by a bloated origin story. Despite this successful interpretation, screenwriter David S. Goyer says that the mysterious nature of his character received a lot of push-back from studio heads, with Warner Bros. preferring that the character had a more defined origin story.
"I do remember when we were talking about, 'Well what if the Joker doesn't really have an origin story?' Even after the success of Batman Begins that was considered a very controversial thing and we got a lot of push-back. People were worried."
Goyer went on to explain that there was a lot of worry surrounding the idea of making Joker's origins a mystery, with the studio very unsure how well this would play with audiences. The reason for this was, at the time, the most popular depiction of the villain was Jack Nicholson's portrayal in 1989's BATMAN. That version of the character was given an origin story that tied into the Bruce Wayne/Batman dynamic and trying something different with the character in THE DARK KNIGHT gave the studio cold feet.
The origin of Heath Ledger's Joker is never really made clear in THE DARK KNIGHT, with the villain offering several different versions of how he got his infamous scars. His haunting tales only serve to make the character more off-balanced and truly insane which makes him a far more compelling villain than if he was given a traditional backstory. There is a certain chaotic charm and mysterious allure to how he's presented and I honestly couldn't imagine having the character any other way in the film.
Do YOU think it was right to not give the Joker a backstory in THE DARK KNIGHT?
