Having Batman in the Victorian-era is one of those “no duh” ideas that always seem inevitable in hindsight. Batman already stalks and crouches on Gothic architecture – especially gargoyles – and the Victorian-era is nothing but gargoyles and shit! So when Mike Mingola (or HELLBOY fame) drew GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT, it became an instant critical success.
Now there’s a new animated feature on the way from DC animation. However, to make the animation more palatable some of the artwork had to be subdued (similar to what happened on THE KILLING JOKE animated feature). Hopefully this one can survive the disastrous adaptation choices that film suffered as well. Either way, here’s the official synopsis:
In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.
So any fans of the original graphic novel? And if so, how do you think this looks? Either way, sound off below!
Meanwhile, GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT will stalk on DVD/Blu-Ray next year.
