In the wake of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE's critical drubbing and lower-than-expected box office figures, it's being reported that Warner Bros. has tapped DC Chief Content Officer Geoff Johns and WB executive VP Jon Berg to co-run the newly created DC Films. THR was the first to confirm the move, which is being described as "part of a broader refinement of executive roles at Warners."
DC Films has been a production banner within the studio for quite some time, however it will now "exist as a formal division." Johns and Berg won’t have the same exact role as Kevin Feige's at Marvel and will still have to report to their superiors at WB, but the duo "will be providing guidance and structure to the task of building out the DCEU."
Deadline has also heard that "while the move is a major step for the studio, it is not a reactionary one," and that the "so-called 'director-driven' approach Warner Bros. has touted since first announcing the DC Extended Universe is very much still in effect."
The biggest thing to takeaway from all of this though is that Warner Bros. and DC are fully aware of the negative reactions to BATMAN V SUPERMAN, and that the studio is "keenly interested in being responsive as it maps out the future of the DC Extended Universe." Do you think this is a good move by the studio?
SUICIDE SQUAD, the next installment in the DCEU, will be in theaters on August 5, 2016.
