One of my favorite novels of all time is William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES. I was told to read the book for school at much too young of an age (and then watch the movie afterward) and I was blown away by how intense and savage the book/movie were. Let's read more shite like this!
Anyhow, if you're a fan of LORD OF THE FLIES like I am then you'll be interested to know that Warner Bros has just given a remake of the film (aka a redo of the novel) the okay for production. Oh, and did I mention this new version will feature an "all female cast"?
Interesting, huh? I'm imagining that one scene from BATTLE ROYALE right now. You know the one. Yeah, that one. Minus the guns. This new version of LORD OF FLIES will be written & directed by Scott McGehee & David Siegel, and their plan is to "be faithful to the novel", you know, other than this one twist.
McGehee & Siegel on their all-female LORD OF FLIES:
We want to do a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys. It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behavior they saw in grownups before they were marooned.
McGehee continues:
The subject matter is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn’t been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression. People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling. It is a great adventure story, real entertainment, but it has a lot of meaning embedded in it as well. We’ve gotten to think about this awhile as the rights were worked out, and we’re super eager to put pen to paper.
