Way back in July we brought you the news that Warner Bros had gotten the rights to the book A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES written by Deborah Harkness. Producers Denise DiNovi and Allison Greenspan were onboard for the project as well. However since then we’ve heard absolutely nothing, until now.
Warners have tapped scribe David Auburn for the adaptation, his big break came with the play ‘Proof’. It won the 2001 Tony Award For Best Play and the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama. He then adapted the play for the film version. His other experiences lies with THE LAKE HOUSE and THE GIRL IN THE PARK, which he wrote the screenplays for, this seems to be a pretty big score for the man and something quite different.
The synopsis is as follows: The story centers on a reluctant witch and a 1,500-year-old vampire. The witch — a direct descendant of the first woman executed in the Salem Witch trials — accidentally unlocks an enchanted manuscript and finds herself in a race to prevent an interspecies war.
The follow up book to A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES called SHADOWS OF NIGHT is due out July 10th in both the US and UK. Perhaps Warners are eyeing some kind of franchise for this?
