Warner Bros. believe that Logan’s Run could be their Hunger Games

Every so often there's talk of a remake of LOGAN'S RUN, but for whatever reason it's never been able to get off the ground. This summer the potential remake got a shot in the arm as Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: APOCALYPSE) was brought in to pen the script and develop the film. Kinberg revealed to Collider that Warner Bros. is already speaking with directors and that they consider the project a priority; in fact, Warner Bros. considers LOGAN'S RUN to be potentially as big as THE HUNGER GAMES.

It’s something that potentially is their Hunger Games kind of franchise that is about a younger audience for a younger audience with a big idea. And Logan’s Run, as you know, is the granddaddy of Maze Runner and Hunger Games and so many of these books and movies now. So yeah, they’re seeing it as a potentially really big franchise.

LOGAN'S RUN took place in a seemingly utopian society where its inhabitants were free to pursue all of life's pleasures with one small catch, once you turned thirty, your life was terminated in a bizarre ritual known as Carousel. Some people, known as Runners, attempted to escape their fate and that's when the Sandmen came into play. While LOGAN'S RUN could definitely be considered a sci-fi classic, there's also a lot of room for improvement; perfect fodder for a remake. There's potential for LOGAN'S RUN to span several sequels, but Simon Kinberg states that they're just trying to make one great movie at the moment. The remake will use a lot of ideas from the original but will also serve as a "reinterpretation" of the original ideas.

There’s a lot from the original movie. I love the original movie and I think the storytelling in the original movie is pretty wonderful. The set up is great, I think there’s a lot of world creation that’s pretty awesome as well, though ultimately that’ll be the director’s domain. But yeah there’s a lot from the original film in it, and then there’s a lot of—I guess I would call it reinterpretation from the original film rather than just a whole scale recreation.

Production on the LOGAN'S RUN remake has undergone so many delays over the years (at one point it was going to be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and star Ryan Gosling) that I'll believe it when I see it.
