Netflix's new fantasy action film BRIGHT isn't necessarily enjoying its time in the spotlight, over the past few days. Since the film's debut, the David Ayer-directed movie starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton has received a number of abysmal reviews, with some critics going so far as to say the actioner is “astoundingly bad in virtually every way.” With so many negative write-ups now out in the wild, you have to wonder if Netflix feels as if they've jumped the gun by preemptively ordering a sequel to such an ill-received project. In related news, JoBlo's own JimmyO was kind enough to share his thoughts about the film, which you can read by clicking here.
Today, Netflix released a Bright-themed yule log presentation on their streaming network that features a multi-colored barrel fire set amidst a graffiti-covered alleyway. The video begins when a car comes screeching around the corner, frightening a hooded figure into dropping a magic wand into a barrel full of garbage. Upon hitting the debris, a tranquil CGI fire is set ablaze, which is sure to warm your heart as well as fill your home with the smell of rotting food and soiled medical supplies. I'm pretty sure that I know what Netflix was going for when they put this hour-long video together, I'm just not convinced they were counting on BRIGHT being considered by many to be a "garbage fire" upon its release.
The official synopsis for BRIGHT:
Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
