Not long after the pandemic first hit, we heard of a World War II fantasy horror film called Warhunt, which stars Mickey Rourke and managed to make it through filming at a time when all other productions were shutting down. Now we’re just a month and a half away from having the chance to see how Warhunt turned out, as Saban Films is planning give the film a theatrical, digital, and VOD release on January 21, 2022.
Directed by Mauro Borrelli (The Recall), who also wrote the screenplay with Reggie Keyohara III (The Recall) and Scott Svatos (The Ghostmaker), Warhunt stars Rourke (Sin City), Robert Knepper (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), and Jackson Rathbone (Twilight). Here’s the synopsis:
1945. A US military cargo plane loses control and violently crashes behind enemy lines in the middle of the German black forest. Immediately ruthless Major Johnson (Mickey Rourke) sends a squad of his bravest soldiers on a rescue mission to retrieve the top secret material the plane was carrying. Led by Sergeant Brewer (Robert Knepper) and Walsh (Jackson Rathbone), the soldiers venture deep into the forest near the crash site. They soon discover hanged Nazi soldiers and other dead bodies bearing ancient, magical symbols. Suddenly their compasses fail, their perceptions twist and straying from the group leads to profound horror as they are attacked by a powerful, supernatural force. Fighting for the dainty and struggling to survive they must uncover the shocking truth behind the force before the Nazis and do everything they can to remove all evidence it ever existed, even at the cost of their own lives.
Warhunt was produced by Julie Zaytseva of Forma Pro Films, Adel Nur of Atomik Content, and Yu-Fai Suen.
Borrelli describes his film as a “wild ride with powerful images; but also a great metaphor about war and its evil, told with powerful iconic characters.”
A short teaser for Warhunt was posted online a year ago, and can be seen below. With the Saban Films release so close, we should be seeing a full trailer for the film very soon.
