Violent Night: David Harbour’s Santa Claus action film comes to town with $1.1 million in Thursday previews

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever closes in on the $400 million mark, and although Thanksgiving weekend had been the worst box office intake in history, this week is showing a spark of activity for the humble action movie Violent Night, with $1.1 million earned on Thursday night. Wakanda Forever is looking to win the weekend again for four weeks at the top, but the Christmas action movie looks to be on track to be a sleeper hit.

Deadline has the report on the box office take at the beginning of the weekend. The new film from 87North Productions came down the chimney at 5 pm on 3,000 screens on Thursday and is projected to make $10M-$12M. However, going up against a Marvel film is quite the undertaking, especially one as popular as Black Panther, it will be a small victory, though it will fall short of the Wakanda-projected $17M-$25M.

Disney’s animated adventure, Strange World, took in $396K yesterday after a weekend debut of $13.8M last week. Third place went to the dark satire, The Menu, with $514K, which totals out to $21.1M. The war drama Devotion, starring upcoming Creed III baddie Jonathan Majors, finished in fourth place Thursday with $421K, which brings its total up to about $11M.

The early preview screenings of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was able to collect $1.1M on Tuesday when its special pre-Netflix run ended. The whodunnit comedy was able to take in a total of $14.7M for its week in theaters. The film will be available to stream on Netflix at the end of the month on December 23.
