Vince McMahon series in the works at Blumhouse TV

WWE is partnering with Blumhouse Television to develop a new scripted television series, The United States of America vs. Vince McMahon. The show will chronicle the wrestling magnate's 1990s trial for allegedly giving steroids to WWE talent.

Back in 1993, McMahon was indicted by the United States Department of Justice on illegal activity directly related to anabolic steroids. The charges against McMahon could have led to up to 11 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine. At the time, this cast a significant shadow of doubt over his entire company, including whether he would be the one to lead it forward into the future.

Despite what seemed like a serious blow to his career and the future of the brand, McMahon was victorious in court. Following an 18-day trial in 1994, he was acquitted by a jury in the Federal District Court of charges that he conspired to distribute steroids to wrestlers under his employ. A particularly fascinating part of the series will be its portrayal of pro wrestlers getting called to the stand for testimony. This includes Terry Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, who testified that he used steroids and would regularly pick up steroids at WWE headquarters, but also confirmed that McMahon never directed him to use them. Blumhouse TV president Chris McCumber had this to say about the upcoming series:

"We have a dramatic, riveting saga — one that’s crazier than fiction — that will appeal to the cross-section of Blumhouse and WWE fans. To say I’m thrilled about collaborating again with WWE is an understatement."

The series doesn't have a writer attached as of yet but McMahon will be an executive producer of the project along with WWE’s chief of global television distribution Kevin Dunn, McCumber, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum, and Jeremy Gold. Per the show's logline, "with his liberty at stake, two school-aged children at home and with WWE on the brink of bankruptcy, [McMahon] refused to take a plea deal. Ultimately, McMahon stood trial and was acquitted unanimously by a jury of his peers and went on to build a multi-billion-dollar global sports entertainment empire.”
