Sony Pictures has recently announced that the release date for Vin Diesel's BLOODSHOT is being pushed back from February 21st, 2020 to March 13, 2020. Although the film is moving nearly a month away from its original debut, the delay will have the Valiant comic adaptation in a much better position to make its mark at the box office. Had BLOODSHOT kept its February date, the forthcoming action spetacle would have found itself in direct competition with DC's BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMACIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) which opens on February 7th, as well as the release of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, which is now set for a Valentine's Day debut after applying extensive upgrades to the film's title character. With BLOODSHOT moved to a March release, Diesel's long-awaited actioner will instead square off against films like Lionsgate’s faith-based drama I STILL BELIEVE and Dave Bautista's family-friendly romp I SPY.
Directed by Dave Wilson from a screenplay penned by Eric Heisserer, the upcoming film follows Marine Ray Garrison (Diesel), who is resurrected by a secret team of scientists and he and his wife are murdered. "Enhanced with nanotechnology, he becomes a superhuman, biotech killing machine – Bloodshot. As Ray first trains with fellow super-soldiers, he cannot recall anything from his former life. But when his memories flood back and he remembers the man that killed both him and his wife, he breaks out of the facility hellbent on revenge, only to discover that there’s more to the conspiracy than he originally thought." In addition to Diesel, BLOODSHOT also stars Eiza Gonzalez (BABY DRIVER), Sam Heughan (OUTLANDER), Talulah Riley (WESTWORLD), Alex Hernandez (HEMLOCK GROVE), Toby Kebbell (KONG: SKULL ISLAND), Lamorne Morris (NEW GIRL), and Guy Pearce (MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS).
With the release of BLOODSHOT, Valiant is hoping to snag a slice of Hollywood's oh-so-delicious and lucrative superhero pie. Should BLOODSHOT arrive as a hit, the indie comic book company hopes to introduce other characters from their pantheon to the big screen, such as Faith, Archer & Armstrong, Quantum and Woody, Harbinger, X-O Manowar, Ninjak, and my personal favorite, The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage. Much of Valiant's future on the silver screen depends on audience response and dollars earned, so be sure to check BLOODSHOT out when it hits theaters if you're looking for more comic book cinema outside the realm of the Big Two, Marvel and DC.
BLOODSHOT will now put a hit out on theaters March 13, 2020.
