Well, the speculation on Vin Diesel's involvement in director James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY can now end as Marvel has officially announced the actor as the voice of Groot, the tree-like creature that is best known for his one and only phrase "I am Groot." Gunn shared the news on Facebook, praising Diesel personally, saying, "Vin Diesel is a super awesome dude. I can't tell you how much I like this guy," and then restated the conformation with:
"Yep it is completely official. AND he's amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I'm kidding but I'm not!)"
Diesel joins the already impressive team of Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and Bradley Cooper as Rocket Racoon, not to mention the rest of cast, including Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Ophelia Lovibond, and Gregg Henry for the space-set comic book adaptation, which is described as:
In the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an unlikely cast of characters including Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon must join forces to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.
Pretty cool stuff. I personally think that GUARDIANS is going to surprise the hell out of everyone and be a major hit for the studio that will serve to further cement their standing as the kings of the genre. From the diverse filmmakers, actors, and faith in the source material (not to mention the resulting box office), they clearly have a grasp on what they're doing and the casting of Diesel is another indicator of that.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens on August 01, 2014.
